Am delighted to be presenting at the 42nd meeting of the European Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID). I was awarded a participation grant and am honoured to be part of this prestigious conference. While we have overarching regional and global policies such as the Abuja declaration, there are vast differences in the health expenditure per capita, Malawi's own is $34. While the health care is free in Malawi, households still suffer from catastrophic costs. In hard to reach areas, the chance of people suffering from catastrophic costs is high. I think at household level, that is where the most economics takes place. For example, if you are a woman in a hard to reach area with 4 U.S dollars, would you rather buy food for your household or pay a motorcycle taxi to take your infant child who is suffering from acute watery diarrhoea to the nearest health centre ?. Those are the opportunity costs that many people in low income settings such as Malawi, face everyday. That extra transportation cost that you would incur as you seek health services is what we call catastrophic costs. The work that we did was to provide a first line intervention in an emergency setting that provided care right in the community catering to both Malawi and Mozambique households. And that is the true definition of universal health coverage (UHC). #ESPID##ESPID2024##PID##cholera##awd#
