WELLBEING WEDNESDAY - SPA DAY WITH THE LADS? WHY NOT! This week sees the Global Wellness Summit in Scotland, where thought leaders in the wellness world come together to discuss and shape the interconnected world of wellness. This also coincides with National Spa Week in the UK, and as its Movember let’s talk more about men’s wellbeing and the spa environment. Once a niche idea, men’s spa days and male-only retreats are on the rise, with male spa attendance tripling in the last five years (ISPA, 2023). The Global Wellness Institute’s trend ‘From Manning Up to Opening Up’ shows that a cultural shift is underway with a rise of social and emotional wellness offerings to help men to connect with themselves and each other; prioritising both physical and mental health, and embracing wellness rituals without stigma. So, how can we help more men in other parts of the world embrace this trend and see spas and wellness experiences as an essential for their mental, physical, emotional and social wellbeing? By letting them know that a spa day or retreat offers a whole lot more than just some downtime—it’s a chance to recharge, manage stress and anxiety, with retreats offering new approaches for recognising and dealing healthily with emotions. There is also the opportunity to bond with friends and other men; so important in these times when male loneliness and isolation are on the rise. That said how robust is your current spa menu and wellbeing offering vis-à-vis this trend for men? Could you be doing more? Are retreats something that you’d be interested in hosting, but don't know where to start on implementing them? If this is something you’d like to explore then I’m here to help, using my 360° Transformational Guest Wellbeing Experience framework. However, men have long been regulars at bathhouses in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, where sauna culture is part of life. Heat and cold therapies have long been known to strengthen immunity, while massage can ease anxiety, improve sleep, and provide real stress relief. So, how can we help more men in other parts of the world embrace this tradition and see spas and wellness experiences as an essential for wellbeing? Yet, it's precisely in these bustling times that self-care becomes paramount, serving as a beacon guiding us back to our center. This is where spa treatments transcend mere indulgence; they become vital rituals in maintaining mental health and fostering an environment where creativity and peace can flourish. Through expertly curated experiences designed for relaxation and rejuvenation, we offer technologies that help in a temporary escape. We provide technologies to the wellness industry where the art of self-care can be practiced with the same intention and focus as any other aspect of life deemed essential. Let's redefine luxury as not just an experience reserved for special occasions but as a fundamental part of a balanced life dedicated to sustaining our mental health and overall well-being. Your insights on integrating wellness practices into daily life could inspire countless others to embrace self-care not as an option but as a necessity.

I’ll never forget my first wellness retreat—it was way more than just a chance to relax. It opened my eyes to how powerful a truly personalized wellness experience can be. Everything was set up to help us unwind, but the part that stuck with me was how unique the approach felt, like it was tailored just for me. I felt this mix of excitement and curiosity, ready to jump into something that went way beyond the typical “spa getaway.” That was the moment it hit me: wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all. Watching people around me make their own discoveries through personalized, culture-infused practices made me realize how much richer these experiences can be when they go deeper. Since then, I’ve seen how luxury retreats are shifting toward a more holistic approach. They’re bringing in elements like sustainable dining, cultural immersion, and activities that touch on all parts of wellness—mind, body, and soul. Seeing how guests embrace this reminds me of the magic that happens when travel is truly intentional and personal. Biggest takeaway? Wellness should be multifaceted and unique to each of us. Travel that makes space for reflection, growth, and connection is what sticks with you long after you’re home. Have you had a travel experience that shifted your view on wellness? I’d love to hear about it!

This topic is something I identified with very quickly when completing my integrative therapy diploma level 4 in Australia many moons ago, and then discovering employment challenges when returning to the UK because I wasn't a beauty/spa therapist. Back then, (2007) 😲 'wellness' wasn't a thing. Unless you were in a top level destination property with innovative, worldly Spa Directors leading the way. And yet today, we are at the other extreme. 'Wellness wellness wellness' is all I hear about. The question is, are we upskilling our beauty/spa therapists to fully appreciate and understand what this word really means? and Vice versa...Are we giving our holistic health therapists the commercial/operational skills they need to fully understand the spa business? 🩵🤍
Wellness vs Spa: Another video snippet from our Spa Life International UK Therapist Talk Back Session. Plus here's a bit more around our thoughts on this topic: In today’s fast-paced world, the terms "spa" and "wellness" are often used interchangeably, leading to a significant disconnect between these two concepts. As Susie Ellis, the chair and CEO of the Global Wellness Institute, emphasises; while spas offer components of wellness, true wellness encompasses a far more extensive range of practices and philosophies. This of course has an impact for our spa therapists, because wellness is a broader and more holistic concept. A wellness therapist, as noted by the National Wellness Institute, aims to educate and empower clients to make long-term lifestyle changes that promote overall health and wellbeing. Let’s stay with this for a moment and consider this role further. These practitioners, often referred to as wellness coaches or holistic health practitioners, take a more comprehensive approach. They are trained in various disciplines such as nutrition, fitness, sound healing, energy healing, stress management, and behavioural therapy. Plus in pursuit of those health goals a wellness therapist may work with clients over longer periods. So, if our guests are seeking those longer-term health benefits associated with the wellness approach, we must ask: Are our spa therapists ready, willing and able to step into the role of wellness therapist in order to deliver a truly authentic wellness programme? Is this an opportunity to upskill or attract new specialised talent? How does this affect the way in which we run the spa and what should the guest journey look like? What are your thoughts on this? We'd love to know. Carly and Julie Sara with Rosie Langlay-Smith #spamanager #spajourney #spatherapist #spa #wellness #upskilling #talentattraction

According to the Global Wellness Institute 2024 trend, “The Power of the Pilgrimage,” is a compelling expression of a rising hunger for simpler, deeper and more profound wellness in travel. Walking a pilgrimage is a journey of both physical and spiritual exploration, offering a unique blend of fitness, mindfulness, and personal growth. The long-distance walking improves physical health, boosting cardiovascular fitness and endurance, while the reflective nature of the journey fosters mental clarity, reduces stress, and promotes emotional well-being. Doing a pilgrimage with the company of a human companion or an animal, can enhance the experience by providing companionship, emotional support, and a grounding presence. This is a great way to encourage mindfulness and connection to the present moment, making the pilgrimage even more calming and fulfilling. #Jayasom, we support low-pressure, simple, profound, tech-free wellness experiences where emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing matter most. #Jayasom #WellnessTrends #Mindfulness #PersonalGrowth #WellnessTravel #TechFreeWellness
