One of my conversations this week was about having conversations with the neighbors. In at least Alberta, ranchers have a series of Acts that when summed up say if you have livestock, you need a fence sufficient to keep them on your property. Should the animal escape, you may have conversations about damage, a ticket may be issued, or the animal is put under control and can be sold for care and feeding... or all three. If each neighbor has livestock, they are jointly responsible for the fence and can agree on its care and upkeep. If not, the Line Fence Act can help solve the issue. You may have heard the line in a poem about how good fences make good neighbors. But like these two, there may be a need for two fences.

At Pāmu™ we are constantly striving towards farming excellence - it's a huge priority, always has been and always will be. In the coming year we are focusing on implementing core farming principles: - soil health and plant growth - animal health and welfare - feeding systems. When farmers are unrelenting with these, gains can be seen in animal reproduction, survival rates, carcass weights, milk production and more. We use external regional benchmarks across dairy and livestock so we can strive for continuous improvement by evaluating how we compare against industry averages. To our Stock Manager, Scotty, "it means working together to make the station better. Each day I help to focus on improving daily operations, animal care, and planning for the future." #FarmingExcellence #ContinuousImprovement #PāmuNewZealand #FarmsofNZ

How to fool the hens #media, #communication, #public, #reaction, #mass_management I'll tell you a story, a real story, something that is a fact. This story could be titled: "How to fool the hens" Well, poultry farmers know that when a hen spots red, something happens to it and it starts to behave cannibally. When, for example, in a poultry farm, when one of them bleeds, the others jump on it and peck at it furiously. As can be seen, such behaviour can lead to real carnage, resulting in a sharp decline in the population of farmed birds. The traditional way of dealing with this problem is to use a hot knife to cut the tip off the beak of the poultry to make it less sharp and cause less dangerous injuries. But - and here is the main part of the story I want to tell - in 1989, a company in the US, called "Animalens", marketed red contact lenses for hens in poultry farms. Indeed, the hens, once they were fitted with the lenses, saw everything red, consequently, they got into fewer fights and, in addition, because of the reduction in their activity, they consumed less food without reducing their egg-laying productivity. The hen population was brought under control!!!! Eventually, due to the intervention of animal welfare organisations, the fitting of contact lenses to chickens was banned. That was my story. And of course, any resemblance to other events, persons, things, situations etc. historical or current is coincidental...
