📷 This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows spiral galaxy NGC 5668. At first glance, it doesn’t seem remarkable: it's around 90 000 light-years across, similar in size and mass to our own Milky Way, and our face-on view shows open spiral arms. 🤔 But one difference is that NGC 5668 is forming new stars 60% more quickly than our galaxy, and this enhanced star formation rate comes with a corresponding abundance of supernova explosions. 🔗https://lnkd.in/ehPRyW34

THE HUBBLE IS BACK. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Hubble Space Telescope has captured its first new images since switching to an alternative mode that operates with a single gyroscope. The telescope resumed scientific operations on June 14 after being out of service for several weeks due to a malfunction in one of its gyroscopes, which are crucial for controlling and orienting the telescope. The new image showcases NGC 1546, a nearby galaxy in the Dorado constellation. The galaxy's orientation provides a clear view of its dust lanes from a slightly elevated perspective, backlit by the galaxy’s core. This dust absorbs light from the core, giving it a reddish hue and making the dust appear rusty-brown. The core itself shines brightly with a yellowish light, indicating an older star population. Bright blue regions of active star formation shine through the dust. Several background galaxies are also visible, including an edge-on spiral just to the left of NGC 1546. Is this a three body problem? Not quite, just a triple-star system! These stars are all T Tauri stars, they tend to be younger than 10 million years old, much younger than our 4.6 billion-year-old Sun. They’re often found still swaddled in the clouds of dust and gas from which they formed. This image was captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Using our NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers recently found some of the most treacherous places for planets in a nearby star cluster—Cygnus OB2—the nearest large cluster of stars to our Sun in the Milky Way. X-rays and intense ultraviolet light produced by giant stars can have a devastating impact on the formation of planets. Scientists studying Cygnus OB2 have found that the most dangerous place for a would-be planet is within roughly 1.6 light-years of the most massive stars in the cluster. #CosmicJourney #Chandra25

If you wish to learn more about this ocean-atmosphere coupled phenomenon that affects global weather set aside 7 minutes to watch this video. The transition from La Niña 2021 to El Niño 2023 is used to visualize the interaction between the ocean and atmosphere during the change of phase. The visualization is a comprehensive explainer showing changes in the upper 300 meters of the Pacific Ocean (such as thermocline relaxation and eastward movement of warm temperature anomalies) and the changes in the lower atmosphere (e.g., the Walker Circulation). It is among the first efforts in visualizing the Walker Circulation and its convective branch moving across the Pacific without schematic plots but rather with verified model outputs.
