TLDR: Despite TikTok's growth as a search engine, Google retains ~90% market share overall. Emerging AI search platforms have an uphill battle.

The search landscape is evolving rapidly, with new players like OpenAI and Perplexity trying to capture market share. Surprisingly, the most significant disruption to search in recent years hasn't come from AI but from TikTok. Among certain demographics, TikTok is becoming a go-to search tool, especially for categories like food, travel, fashion, and lifestyle.
Data from Google’s own internal research in 2022 showed that nearly 40% of Gen Z users turn to TikTok or Instagram instead of Google for search on topics like restaurants and travel recommendations (TechCrunch & CNBC). And recent data from Pew Research highlights that 59% of users ages 18-29 report using TikTok, with many preferring it over traditional search engines for visual-first categories like makeup tutorials, product reviews, and “how-to” content.
Google’s overall market share, however, remains resilient. Despite these shifts in certain demographics, Google still holds over 90% of the global market share as of recent data from StatCounter and Similarweb. TikTok’s growth highlights a niche shift, but Google's dominance is preserved due to its vast distribution channels and pre-installed status across browsers and devices.
Here’s the challenge for AI-driven competitors: reaching the scale and distribution needed to drive behavioral change. Many of these AI platforms lack pre-installation on default browsers, which are often controlled by companies developing their own AI solutions. Unless regulatory changes emerge to ease entry for these competitors, Google's market share is unlikely to shift significantly in the next 3-5 years.
Interestingly, the path forward for AI-powered search might be through productivity tools for businesses. These tools provide clear ROI for companies, and AI search could gain traction in business workflows before reaching the everyday consumer. Over time, this indirect exposure could shape how we use and think about search.
In short, while we may see some fluctuations, Google is poised to maintain its market dominance. Without regulatory shifts, Google will remain the leader, and the evolution of search may come from AI transforming productivity in other areas before consumer habits change.
