🌳 We need your help to make our trails more accessible!🌳 Waypoint Adventure is a supporting organization on the Trails for All Act (S.446 and H.769), and we advocate for the Economic Development Bond Bill. This amendment filed by Jo Comerford would create a Trails Access Working Group to improve accessibility on Massachusetts trails. Why does this matter? Currently, out of 4,000 miles of unpaved trails in our State Parks, only 7.5 miles are accessible. That's a huge disparity when 33-47% of our population could benefit from more accessible trails, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families with young children. ⏰ Take action by July 11th! Contact Senate President Karen Spilka, Chair Michael Rodrigues, and your State Senator to urge them to support Amendment 35. Spread the word and share this post! Let's make Massachusetts trails accessible for everyone! Check out the links below! Everyone deserves access to green spaces. Transportation represents one of the biggest barriers to time in nature. In rural and urban communities alike, individuals without cars or living in neighborhoods lacking public transit simply cannot reach the public lands and spaces that were established for all Americans to enjoy. The Transit to Trails Act would tackle this disparity by establishing a grant program to fund accessible transportation systems in areas of the country with the highest need so that access to public lands is more equitable and convenient for all. This bill: • Prioritizes low-or zero-emissions vehicles; • Prioritizes projects that provide free and discounted rates for low-income riders; and • Ensures that all funded transportation connectors and routes are accessible to people with disabilities. We need more Congressional champions to throw their support behind this important legislation. Take action today and urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor the Transit to Trails Act. https://lnkd.in/g4gJHX9u REI #gtoutside #takeaction #greenspace

So important for our cities to be planned with USEABLE urban green space for everyone and not continue promoting the unusable left over green spaces that often meet minimum code requirements. Parks provide instrumental foundational social and health functions in our communities and too often are dismissed and reduced to meeting a greenspace code requirement. They should be planned as primary organizing elements of our communities. Hopefully if this passes cities will prioritize their planning differently and actually fund parks better as a true public infrastructure and not be seen as just checking the boxes of meeting minimum requirements.
Earlier this week, the House of Representatives advanced a package of bills containing the #OutdoorsforAll Act! The Outdoors for All Act will codify the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP), which supports the development of urban parks in traditionally underserved neighborhoods. Most importantly, it will increase access to parks and green spaces regardless of a person’s background, income, or zip code. This is a huge step for the 100 million people across the U.S. who lack safe and easy access to a quality park within a ½ mile walk of their home. Now, let’s keep the momentum going and get the #OutdoorsforAll Act through the Senate! In the U.K., a study funded by the National Trust revealed that more than 3 in 4 children are unable to spend as much time in nature as they wish, with accessibility as the main barrier. Another recent study found that “a third of British children spend less than an hour a day outside in summertime,” with more than 70% of parents wanting their children to get more fresh air and exercise. The Trust is now calling on the U.K. government to live up to previous commitments to ensure every person will have access to a green space within a 15-minute walk of their homes. This is heartbreaking! As a Progressive Learning school, we often remove barriers to going outside because we believe in the value of experimental learning and the benefits of connecting with nature. By allowing frequent access to outdoor environments we enhance creativity, critical thinking and overall well-being. Removing the barriers to nature makes a holistic approach to education possible. 💡 #ProgressiveLearning #ChildLedEducation #HandsOnLearning #CuriosityDriven #OpenMindedEduction #SocraticLearning #HolisticEducation

The Power of Parks 🌳 “Power and hope emerge in surprising places. Envisioning, planning, creating, and stewarding a park exemplifies social infrastructure, enabling communities to address social issues on their terms and replace despair and frustration with hope and action.” In SSIR’s summer issue, read about how the Trust for Public Land is helping communities from Hawai‘i to Washington, DC, revitalize their parks and build community power in the midst of ongoing social crises: “To respond to the times, parks and public spaces must become not just passive spaces but catalysts in forming a healthy polity. In caring for the commons of parks and green spaces, we nurture social solidarity, civic engagement, and a thriving democracy.” Read the full story >> https://lnkd.in/e8bgMN3X #democracy #parks #community #power

🌿 Join the Movement for Better Access to Nature! 🌳 Parents across the UK are rallying together, calling on the government to prioritize access to nature for children. A recent article from Pro Landscaper Magazine highlights the growing concern and the urgent need for action. Research consistently shows the numerous benefits of outdoor play and green spaces for children's physical and mental well-being. Yet, many families face barriers to accessing nature, whether it's due to limited green spaces in urban areas or safety concerns. As advocates for a greener and healthier future, it's imperative that we support initiatives aimed at improving access to nature for all children. By advocating for parks, playgrounds, and green schoolyards, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to connect with the natural world. Let's join forces and urge policymakers to prioritize green spaces and outdoor environments in our communities https://lnkd.in/eA3ftEBe #GreenSpaces #Outdoor #Nature #ProLandscaper #LocalAuthorities #Landscapers

This year’s #OlderAmericansMonth theme is #PoweredByConnection. As we celebrate older Americans, let’s recognize the importance of road safety to help ensure connection. By fostering connections within our communities, we can provide the support and resources needed to help the older adults in our lives improve and maintain safety behind the wheel. Whether you’re offering to accompany them on errands, sharing driving tips, or encouraging regular check-ups, every effort counts in promoting road safety. Learn more about how older drivers can improve their road safety at www.roadsafeseniors.org.
