The evaluation of Working Wales, a careers and employability support service delivered by Careers Wales since 2019, offers valuable insights and recommendations for future service needs. In 2019 the Welsh Government commissioned Wavehill to conduct a full programme evaluation. Over the last five years, we have developed a comprehensive evaluation framework and extensive evaluation reports on different aspects of this service. The latest reports in this series include: 👉 The Rural and Urban Paper: This examines geographical accessibility and differences in service delivery between rural and urban areas. 👉 The Refugee and Migrant Paper: This assesses how Working Wales provides support for refugees and migrants. It highlights strengths and identifies gaps for future delivery. 👉 The Strategic Report: This provides summative findings from the evaluation and offers recommendations to enhance future service delivery. These comprehensive assessments have involved consultations with a wide range of key stakeholders and customers. The work reflects the Welsh Government’s commitment to supporting the diverse needs of the Welsh population. It emphasises the importance of tailored support to address the different employability needs that people face. It's International Youth Day: today and everyday we stand with and for young people. Today we want to highlight the support needed by young people as they enter the workplace. Our research has made us alive to the risks facing young people not in education, employment or training. But we know what works: > the more holistic, integrated and structured approaches are the most effective in helping young people to enter the workplace > work placements with *sustained post-placement support* are key to facilitating the labour market entry of young people. Follow the links to read lots of practical examples on post placement support from EU member states, freely available to explore in our report on Placement Support. ###FromHouseHelptoSkilledProfessional We have a story of a 24-year old house help who lost both of his parents. His employer, who also became his guardian, saw potential in him and decided to enroll him in a plumbing training course at the African Centre for Technical Training (ACTT). On his free days, this young man would join his colleagues to secure contract jobs, slowly building a stable income. Today, he is not just surviving—he is thriving in the TVET sector, contributing to the economy in ways he never imagined. The pie chart below illustrates the employment status of young people aged 18-45 at the time of their enrollment at ACTT: - 33% Unemployed - Trainees who were previously unemployed. - 11% Entrepreneurs - Young people running their own businesses. - 23% Corporate Professionals- individuals working in white-collar jobs - 32% Others - ice cream vendors, bolt drivers, car wash attendants, contractors, etc. These percentages represent more than just data points; they signify the diverse paths young people are taking to build their future and the real growth in our economy. There is an important observation: we currently have fewer self-employed individuals compared to those with white-collar jobs. This imbalance has significant implications on young people. White-collar jobs, while valuable, can be unstable, and their loss can leave young people vulnerable. In contrast, skilled workers—can create their own opportunities and build resilient businesses that contribute to economic stability and personal empowerment. At ACTT, our mission goes beyond just increasing enrollment numbers. We are committed to transforming lives through skill development in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). I have seen firsthand how young people who once sold ice cream on the streets have changed their lives, gaining decent incomes and newfound purpose through training at ACTT. On this World Humanitarian Day, I invite you to be part of this journey. Support a young person by sponsoring their enrollment in a #plumbing or #woodwork training program at ACTT. This could be the moment that changes their life forever. One skilled worker at a time. The lives of many young people—and the strength of our economy—depend on it. Today is UK Employability Day, which aims to celebrate organisations that support local people to gain, sustain and progress in work. This year’s theme is "Employment Support for Every Citizen". Over the last two years I’ve been advertising and supporting our UWS Psychology students to reflect, evidence and articulate their employability skills for recognition via the Volunteer Recognition Scheme headed by Nigel Royle. Beyond the overall satisfaction I get from encouraging students achieve this award and grow their persuasive employment communication skills, I am always highly impressed by the character and quality of their real-life volunteering experiences. Some provide high-level professional services and work autonomously. Others manage projects and teams. Every single one has an element of leadership and initiative-taking. We shouldn’t undervalue the importance of these experiences for students. Volunteering (and part-time employment while studying) can provide students with many opportunities to gain and apply key employability skills that graduate employers value. #WorkingForBetterWork #EmpDay24 #volunteering #parttimework
