Thank you, Rhonnel Sotelo, for these kind words 🥹 Everyone! As you may know, RFF is nearing the end of its spenddown and I am fortunate for the opportunity to stay through June 2024 and complete my work here. I’m excited -- and nervous -- at the thought of a career transition and meeting a new team. I’ve begun connecting with colleagues old and new, and updating my resume and LinkedIn Profile, and of course, searching. Will you please help me in my search? I’ve worked for over twenty years in various capacities supporting improvement in public education. I still firmly believe that solutions to our most complex challenges (in education and beyond) will be found by unleashing the potential of all our young people. We simply cannot afford to neglect our own future, and that means supporting all our children to grow, thrive, and learn. More specifically: *I’m a 10+ year experienced family foundation program officer. My grant recommendations and time have focused on Oakland public education, innovation, and governance. I would love to lead or join another philanthropic team. *I’m an experienced nonprofit board member and am on my way to becoming a nationally certified school board coach through the Council of Great City Schools. No matter where I land, I plan to stay connected to public education through school board coaching. *I’m a public middle school educator and administrator by training. Middle schools are special places for me. And now, I need your help! Please tell me about and connect me to your growing team or organization looking to hire, or one you are close with. I’m told that my talents will in fact travel to different organizations 😉, so I’m interested to learn about opportunities in adjacent/new fields, as well. In particular, if you know of schools or school systems that are seeking help to support the work of their senior leadership teams or governing board; or roles in philanthropy, at family foundations, or other funders -- please let me know and send them my name! I also love helping get projects up and off the ground, and so please let me know about part time and temporary opportunities, too, that are coming up for you now or soon! To all of you consultants out there I'm connected with -- let me know if there's an existing or upcoming project for which you need a helping hand =).

Great article on community colleges and philanthropy. Community colleges are our nation’s greatest engines of economic and social mobility, and a driving force of local and regional economies. Community colleges enroll 30% of all higher education students yet receive only 1.5% of the $58 billion in philanthropic support to higher education. Community college alumni work in every industry and are distinguished civic and corporate leaders throughout the country. Philanthropists looking to make a transformational impact should take a closer look at community colleges. #communitycollege #philanthropy

We're excited to introduce Bridge Play Foundation, a nonprofit organization I co-founded with the mission of creating inclusive opportunities for youth, families, and communities in the South Bronx and beyond. Our foundation is dedicated to fostering community engagement, promoting healthy lifestyles, and ensuring equitable access to sports for all. At Bridge Play Foundation, we believe that sports have the power to unite and uplift communities. We’re working hard to provide recreational sports programs that bring people together, build confidence, and create lifelong connections. Here’s a look at what we’ve been focusing on: *Game Changer Grants Program — This initiative is designed to provide financial support to local leagues and commissioners, helping them cover the costs of park permits, equipment, and uniforms, ensuring that recreational sports remain accessible to all. *Bridge Play Softball League — We’ve launched a league that serves over 600 players across more than 30 teams, providing a platform for local adults to engage in friendly yet competitive play. It’s more than just a game—it’s a community. We are also proud to have WLB-Care Organization as one of our key partners, supporting our mission to empower communities through sports. Their commitment to veterans and community engagement helps us move forward in making a lasting impact. We’re actively seeking sponsors, partners, and community leaders who want to make a difference in the lives of underserved individuals. Whether through sponsorship, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, your support will help us achieve our vision of creating stronger, healthier communities. Together, we can make a lasting impact—one game at a time! 🏆 #BridgePlayFoundation #GameChangerGrants #CommunityEngagement #SportsForAll #YouthSports #SouthBronx #SoftballLeague #WomenInSports #NonprofitLeadership #CorporateSocialResponsibility #HealthyCommunities #PlayWithPurpose

NEW CEP RESEARCH: In the wake of the June 2023 U.S. Supreme Court rulings against affirmative action at universities, there was concern about a possible "chilling effect” on philanthropic efforts that support racial equity. A new CEP Research Snapshot (a brief report covering a timely issue for funders) reveals that most foundations responding to a survey in the fall of 2023 reported that, so far, they had not made changes to their grantmaking in response to the Court’s rulings.
