The new ACC building in Dunedin is not just an office space; through a highly collaborative design partnership with mana whenua, the building is grounded in the renewal of the placename, Ōtepoti. Gifted the name Ōtepoti, the building site was originally part of the Ōtākou foreshore. The ancient name was given to the site for its distinctive corner shape of the harbour, and reflects the shape of a ‘poti’ - a flax basket used for gathering and transporting food. The exterior glazing, designed by local Ngāi Tahu artist Kirsten Parkinson, includes printed artwork which reflects the woven pattern of a traditional poti basket. It also has a functional purpose, developed to optimise daylighting, shading, and thermal gain to reduce energy demand. Through a highly collaborative design process with mana whenua-owned organisation Aukaha, including Kāi Tahu scholar Megan Pōtiki, and Kāi Tahu artist and Mana Ahurea designer, Kirsten Parkinson, has ensured this project will deliver a design rich in ancient story, grounded with respect and firmly rooted in the wisdom and aspirations of mana whenua.
