#WorkforceWednesday Walmart Distribution Center at 2100 E. Tipton St., Seymour, opened in the summer of 1990. Walmart, the world's largest retailer, has 42 regional distribution centers, and they are a strategic part of the company's supply chain network and exist to keep its more than 4,700 stores stocked with ambient merchandise. With fiscal year 2022 revenue of $573 billion, Walmart employs 2.3 million associates worldwide. The retailer employs more than 43,000 associates in Indiana and supports local business across the state, spending $1.1 billion with Hoosier suppliers in fiscal year 2023 and supporting 33,300 Hoosier supplier jobs. In July 2023, local and company officials announced a $107 million investment at the distribution center in Seymour, including supply chain material handling equipment, information technology equipment and construction-related costs associated with supply chain enhancements. The brand-new technology system, including robotics, automation and AI-powered software, will work to sort, store, retrieve and pack freight onto pallets. The company will use automation to revolutionize intake, increase accuracy and change how freight is handled at the regional distribution centers. The new way of unloading store-friendly palletized trucks will make the process faster and simpler for associates, allowing them to spend more time with customers. The project started in January, and it's expected to be a multi-year project with additional investments to modernize the distribution center. Once complete, the center will be able to ship nearly double the number of cases while evolving strenuous, manual jobs into those offering new skills in robotics and technology. ASDA, one of UKs leading retailer, invested in an AutoStore system back in 2013. The picking rate of the existing system was doubled, and the team was happy to discover that the new solution had an accuracy rate of 99.8%. The initial construction and assembly of the AutoStore grid and workstations took just 7 weeks to complete. At the time, the ASDA warehouse had 164 Robots and 70,000 Bins spread over an area of 1,415 square meters. "The key factor was to re-engineer the facility, building a space-efficient and ergonomic materials-handling application that successfully integrated with the existing operation. It was essential that the system would be able to grow in order to accommodate expansion.” Learn more about ASDA and other grocery cases here in the article below. #AutoStore #grocery #automation

The introduction of racking systems in warehouses revolutionized storage efficiency, particularly with the invention of pallet racking in the 1950s. This innovation is credited to Fred and Norman Sollenberger, founders of the company Speedrack in the U.S. As post-World War II manufacturing and retail industries expanded, traditional shelving couldn't keep up with the demand for space and organization. The Sollenbergers, who were metal fabricators, designed a system using heavy-duty steel frames that allowed pallets to be stacked vertically, utilizing the warehouse’s height rather than just floor space. This system increased storage capacity significantly and allowed for the efficient use of forklifts to retrieve goods from multiple levels. Pallet racking was first adopted by grocery distribution centers, which needed faster and more organized methods for replenishing products in growing supermarkets. The system allowed warehouses to store more goods in less space, improve inventory management, and streamline operations. The success of pallet racking transformed warehouse logistics, laying the foundation for modern warehouse management systems and automation. Today, it is an essential component of warehouses worldwide, enabling large-scale storage and efficient product handling across industries. #Warehouse #supplychain #inventorymanagement

I will never miss a chance to see Stretch and was happy to see it in action again during my site visits in Ohio last week. Stretch is the result of our strategic collaboration with Boston Dynamics, designed to tackle what many agree is the least desirable activity in our warehouses – unloading loose loaded containers. This is strenuous and physically demanding work, but as you can see Stretch takes packages from the back of trailers and place them on a flexible conveyor with ease. The speed Stretch unloads cases varies by product; however it always supports significant advantages in efficiency and productivity. We're now gearing up to scale Stretch into other regions, starting with the UK soon. It's incredible to see how our commitment to digitization and robotics is transforming our operations and setting new standards in the industry. A huge thank you to everyone involved for your dedication and hard work. Your efforts are making a real difference! DHL Supply Chain

2.8 million square feet across 5 floors Across five floors, almost 5,000 robots, over 1,000 employees. Those are the main numbers that will push parcels through Amazon’s new 2.8-million-square-foot distribution center with a 650,000-square-foot blueprint in Charlton, MA. To be precise, there were 1.3 million cubic yards of earth moved, and about 75,000 cubic yards of concrete used to build it, which is more than what was used to build the Empire State Building. The property also features two 250,000-gallon containers which Amazon built outside of the building as water supply in case of a fire. The building is expected to generate approximately 4,000 vehicle trips per day, with 49 loading docks, 265 trailer parking stalls and 1,250 car parking stalls. Anticipated to have a full opening by the holiday season, the building’s top four floors are set to use technology from Amazon Robotics to pick, pack and ship products to localized delivery centers.
