sed designCurrent approaches in design science are characterized by a strong emphasis on meth-ods as opposed to theory. Herbert Simon (Simon, 2008) was one of the early propo-nents studying design as a science. In the 1960s, Simon criticized the lack of atheoretical basis in design methods, describing such ad hoc methods as ‘cook-bookapproaches.’Novel conceptual frameworks for design allow engineers to better describeand solve problems at the system level, such as those involving user interactions. Wepropose a conceptual approach for design based on affordances, a concept used in thestudy of perception in ecological psychology.

While theory emphasizes dialogue and engagement, are the editors of science news websites inclined to promote these ideals? Ifat Zimmerman explored in her Phd research the objectives and practices of four Israeli science news websites considering three science communication theorized models: Dissemination, Dialogue, and Participation. She found gaps between the theoretical aspirations of science communication and their practical execution, emphasizing the dissemination of knowledge with limited engagement in dialogue. The scant implementation of the dialogue model suggests its promises are not concretized in practice, signifying a missed opportunity to reinforce democratic civic behavior through science-related discussions.
