Just returned from vacation and jumped straight into a bug investigation - numbers not adding up, you know the drill.
Caught myself upon a curious thing. Writing #SQL is all good and nice, but if we're talking about granular data (like individual rows) and I really can't find the problem, when I need to iterate very very fast, change aggregations on the fly, play with filters, etc - I resort to its highness the Pivot Table in #Excel.
TL;dr I resort to Excel when I'm desperate.
It's what I would use if I'd get a call on a Friday 15 minutes before leaving to quickly check why something is off.
That, of course, provided we're talking about the right scale of data.
So I guess, use whatever works best for the job and for you specifically. Excel is still a data analysis powerhouse.
But the auto-formatting/conversion/whatever it tries to do to help me has the opposite effect and is just a big pain (although I read that you can turn it off).
Just so don't end the post on a sad note, pictured below, in the distance, Balos area on Crete.
