The insights I got from the Young Leaders Advocacy Seminar organized by the United Europe e.V. at the BDA | Confederation of German Employers' Associations in Berlin was very informative. Take aways: 1. Steffen Kampeter gave a keynote speech about the challenges facing the German labour market ( Quality vs Quantity problem) and possible remedies to fill the 5 Million workforce gap anticipated by 2030. 2. Henrik Schönstedt talked about the challenges facing the steel industry especially regarding workforce recruitment. Henrik highlighted the high demand for Zerspanungsmechaniker. Edith Otiende-Lawani shared thought-provoking insights on the importance of identifying the “missing piece” across various perspectives—be it the company, government, or job seeker. She emphasized that understanding these unique gaps is essential for creating synergy between workforce demands, policy-making, and career pathways. 4.Sophia Roepke highlighted key challenges preventing full participation of women in the workforce and underscored the critical need for flexibility in labor policy design. Her emphasis on creating gender-responsive policies resonates with the importance of adapting workplace standards to support diverse needs and foster inclusivity. 5. Fabian Lukas Goslar brought forward an essential perspective on the critical role of intergenerational dialogue. In an evolving world, fostering meaningful exchanges across generations is key to bridging knowledge gaps, promoting mutual understanding, and driving sustainable progress. For the past 15 years, I've been facilitating high-level executive meetings among leaders in Sweden's business community, with a focus on promoting sustainable practices. In these gatherings, I've underscored the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion as central elements in corporate profitability strategies. In 2023, I was deeply honored to be recognized as one of Sweden's influential figures in sustainability. Growing up as a black individual in a predominantly white Swedish environment, I gradually found the courage to confront the inequalities entrenched in Swedish corporate culture. My aim is to shine a light on this critical issue and inspire others to seek tangible solutions. My advice is straightforward yet impactful: always stay true to yourself and maintain authenticity in every aspect of your journey. I'm excited to announce that along with my co-authors, Gary R. Baker and Fadi Barakat, we have recently released the book "Mångfald, Inkludering och rättvisa" (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion). “Participating in the Summit of the Future reinforced the significance of intergenerational dialogue in crafting sustainable solutions for our global challenges. The side event hosted by Soroptimist International, titled ‘Building Global Momentum for a Sustainable and Equitable Future,’ perfectly encapsulated this theme. As we explored crucial topics like social justice and environmental stewardship, it became clear that fostering collaboration between generations is not just beneficial but essential. Each generation brings unique insights and experiences to the table—older generations offer historical context and wisdom, while younger voices inject urgency and innovative thinking. This synergy is vital as we strive for a future where equity and sustainability are at the forefront of our collective efforts. It’s a call to action for all of us to engage, listen, and work together, ensuring that our actions today pave the way for a just and thriving world tomorrow."

In the long run, a more significant step is to incorporate the goals and values of other groups with your own work, in order to build strong relationships. For instance, in the long run, it is more important that labor unions and community economic development projects include the issue of environmental sustainability in their own strategies, rather than just lending support to the environmental organizations. So communications, strategies and resource sharing is critical, to help us see our connections and build on these."

To mark the 75th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, the wonderful Prof. Sandy Liebenberg published an insightful piece in the Daily Maverick in which she argues that a “lack of adequate accountability mechanisms (including, but not limited to, legal remedies) for implementing and safeguarding socioeconomic, cultural and environmental rights has made democracies more vulnerable to capture by populist elements. Contemporary models of democracy cry out to be reimagined and revitalised to respond to contemporary challenges. In so doing, inspiration should be drawn from the universal, egalitarian, and holistic ethos of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” These important insights are crucial as we tackle climate change and other pressing socio-ecological crises.

As an international research center, we need diversity for our an innovative and sustainable research as well as our working environment, providing us with a diverse range of perspectives and ideas that are essential to tackling complex challenges and developing innovative solutions.
