"3 Life lessons📈 from CanSat Competition" As a member of Team Wanderlust, IIIT Hyderabad I had the golden opportunity in participating the CanSat Competition conducted by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and American Astronautical Society. Taking part in the CanSat competition taught me something incredibly valuable in my life. 1. Team Collaboration 2. Team Management 3. Team Reliability 👉 Team Collaboration :- As an individual, you can be the most talented person out there, but the real challenge in life is creating the best outcomes by working collaboratively with other team members. Earlier, I used to believe that the best outcomes in life could only be achieved by a team of the best people but now I realize that the best outcomes come from working cooperatively with others. 👉 Team Management :- The biggest challenge one faces is managing the diverse personalities within a team. There will be times when you need to compromise with others, debate their ideas, and coordinate between the team and authorities. Being prepared to handle these situations is crucial for growth in both your career and personal development. 👉 Team Reliability :- The hardest hurdle that prevents a team from achieving it's goals is inconsistency in keeping commitments. Our major struggle while building the competition prototype was meeting team deadlines and fulfilling our commitments. It's important to realize that things don't always go in your favour, and you must be prepared to face these challenges. I would like to hear a story from you that's similar to this one. Some of the smartest botanists on the planet are currently working at NASA to create more of a variety of the food we can serve in space. Why is this important? Think about how crazy it makes you to eat the same leftovers over the course of a week. Now think about what eating the same food over and over again would do to a person who's traveling 9-months to Mars. Space is already a mentally challenging environment, so food variety is extremely important to astronauts' mental and physical health. If astronauts have good mental and physical health, then they are more likely to succeed at their mission. Another aspect of eating in space is the taste changes. Because of no gravity, this does something to our receptors where food tastes slightly different in space than here on Earth. So NASA scientists are trying to tweak the flavor profiles of these foods, teas, etc...to make them spicier and more flavorful. I learned all of this during a recent 2-day tour at NASA and in the latest episode, we're talking about how to grow food in space.... What does teamwork look like in space when, if you do it wrong, people die and billions of dollars blow up? I asked Jim Wetherbee, an astronaut & five-time Space Shuttle Commander and this is what he told me: "At NASA, there are three levels of teamwork. The very first level, we do a lot of solo training. We learn ourselves. We learn what are my own strengths and weaknesses? How do I operate the system? ... It's only after you know your own weaknesses and your own strengths that we then get assigned to work with other people - where we begin to understand 'how do I,' for example, 'use the team to mitigate my weaknesses and use my strengths to help them mitigate their weaknesses?' to result in a higher performing team. (At) Cold Lake Canada, (where NASA trains their teams) ... we really are operating as a team under duress, which is when you really see if somebody has good leadership or teamwork or followership - when there's a dangerous environment. That's when you really become a good team. ... In a really high-performing team ... the self begins to disappear. So I'm more interested in helping the team succeed than I am in getting the glory of doing the operation myself, or I'm just as happy assisting you if you're conducting the operation. And I'm simply reading the checklist to you. I'm just as happy doing that because I'm contributing to your success. If that gives me just as great a pleasure as accomplishing the mission, then I'm on a high-performing team. ... On a high-performance team, I'm much more interested in your opinion than I am trying to convince you of my opinion because I have the humility to recognize I might be wrong and I might not have all the right information. So (if you're saying), "Explain to me why you're thinking the way you are?" That's a real high-performance team when I'm more interested in your opinion That I am in giving you my opinion."

I’ve completed the NASA Proposal Writing and Evaluation experience! I was surprised by how complex proposal writing is. There, I learned these key factors for writing winning proposals: -Qualified Team: Show that you have a capable team. If not, seek experts who can provide technical advice, and include them as advisors of the team. -Risk and reward: Explain how your project has low risk and a clear path to implementation. If the project is high risk, demonstrate potential high impact. -Time and Costs: Provide a basis for costs and times through estimates, calculations, and comparisons to similar projects. Make sure to include a reasonable margin for error. That’s just the tip of the iceberg! I hope this sparks your interest in the program or at least encourages you to learn more about proposal writing.
