This is a good article from the Federation of Small Businesses, highlighting how poor internet connectivity hinders small firms, particularly in rural areas. It touches on the issue of how the issue will only worsen as everyday data demands increase. https://lnkd.in/eUNkU_4z

I am biased, but this is some top work from the policy team at ISPA UK. Digital Connectivity is an essential building block for the UK economy and society and the roadmap sets out long term priorities but also those all important quick wins and oven-ready solutions that a new Government can implement in the first 100 days. 1️⃣ Breaking down departmental barriers - connectivity cannot just be a DSIT priority 2️⃣ Finally implementing flexi permits 3️⃣ Committing to a positive and supportive planning framework
We are proud to announce the release of our 2024 policy roadmap, "Delivering Digital Britain". This critical document outlines strategic priorities and actionable policies for the next UK Government to continue the work of transforming the nation's digital infrastructure, ensuring that all citizens have access to fast, reliable, and future-proofed internet connectivity. With just over a week to go to a new government, ISPA’s roadmap provides the next administration with policy ideas to hit the ground running in the first one hundred days, and more medium–to-long term priorities to deliver a competitive and inclusive digital economy. The roadmap outlines a number of quick wins that the next Government can unlock within the 100 hundred days of taking office and which would deliver meaningful change: 1. Recognise that the UK can only tap into the full potential of digital connectivity if it becomes a cross-government priority 2. Provide an immediate speed boost to rollout by fully embracing flexi permits and cancelling plans for street works charging. 3. Create a supportive planning framework that enables providers to focus on delivery and connecting the final third of the country. Longer term, the next Government will further need to provide a competitive and growth-enabling environment that allows the sector to continue to flourish. This includes a holistic approach to regulation and ensuring the public/private partnerships are leveraged to increase coverage across the company. All of this, combined with a campaign on take-up and skills as well as action on resilience and online safety, will provide a stable foundation for the sector to thrive and innovate in areas such as AI and infrastructure development. Steve Leighton, Chair of ISPA says: “We are excited to unveil 'Delivering Digital Britain,' our 2024 roadmap which outlines crucial steps for the next government to ensure that our members can continue to deliver the infrastructure and services that will help to unlock digital opportunities and drive economic growth across the country.” The full roadmap can be found at https://lnkd.in/enRyEY6C

As the State of the Digital Decade Report landed this week, worth revisiting our response to the European Commission White Paper on telecoms. There is more than way to reach high-speed #connectivity goals; and we should be mindful to avoid policy options that favour one goal over another (e.g., connectivity vs cloud adoption)
DOT Europe has submitted its response to the European Commission White Paper on telecoms. A few observations worth highlighting: ➡Some interesting ideas, like regulatory simplification, are put forward. These are worth exploring further as they could be a major driver of economic growth. ➡ Any form of a direct contribution mechanism should be categorically rejected. The results of last year’s exploratory consultation were clear on this point; Member States were also overwhelmingly against the idea. ➡ The market admittedly works well, and no failure has been identified. We should avoid making industrial policy through the back door and intervening when there is no need to do so. Looking forward to continuing this fascinating discussion and bringing the perspective of the online services ecosystem to the table! The consultation is open until 30 June, so there is still time to be part of the conversation! #telecoms #whitepaper https://lnkd.in/gV9jJ8eR

Dear Professionals Here is a fantastic document from our friends at Cluttons courtesy of Darren Zitren MRICS FITP. Well worth downloading and having a read if you have the time... Here's a quick summary; 🔎 Key Findings: 📈 Data Usage Growth: Average monthly broadband data use in the UK has increased by 1683% over the last decade. Predictions indicate data usage will rise from 535GB per connection in 2023 to 800GB by 2030. 💰 Economic Impact: Better connectivity can significantly boost the economy. Poor connectivity costs small and medium businesses about £7.7 billion annually. Accelerating 5G rollout could add £7.4 billion in value by 2030, with potential benefits between £41 billion and £159 billion by 2035. 🌍 Global Ranking: The UK ranks 51st for mobile data speeds and 56th for fixed-line broadband. Other countries are advancing faster, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure. 🏛 Government Targets: ⚡ Broadband: Aim for 85% gigabit-capable broadband coverage by 2024 and nearly 100% by 2030. Current coverage is at 78%. 📶 5G: Target is full coverage in populated areas by 2030. Current outdoor high confidence level is 93%, with 2,000 standalone 5G sites. 👨💼 👩💼 Stakeholder Roles: 🏢 Central Government: Sets strategy, provides funding (e.g., Project Gigabit). 🏢 Local Government: Manages planning and permits for infrastructure. 👷♂️ 👷♀️ Operators: Deliver services and infrastructure. 🏨 Landlords: Ensure connectivity for tenants, supporting net-zero targets. 🔎 Survey Insights: 👨⚖️ 👩⚖️ 73% of MPs consider nationwide gigabit broadband and 5G vital for UK competitiveness. Benefits of connectivity include job creation, economic boost, improved quality of life, enhanced medical care, and innovation. ❌ Challenges: 💰 Funding and strategic coordination are significant hurdles. Policymakers and local authorities need better understanding and support for connectivity benefits and infrastructure needs. 🥇 Conclusion: For the UK to meet its connectivity goals and stay competitive, accelerated infrastructure development, increased funding, and better coordination among stakeholders are crucial. Enhanced digital connectivity will drive economic growth, innovation, and improve overall quality of life.
