Meet Superintendent, Sean Timoney! "Don't sweat the small stuff" is a quote that sticks with Sean through his career... "Early on in my career, I became fixated with everything needing to be perfect. That was fine of course when I was working by myself or with a small crew. As I grew and became a foreman, so did my crew size and project scales. I went from managing 5-10 people to managing 20, then 50, then 100. I could not have handled this transition without taking a step back and not trying to control every detail and trivial thing. This change allowed me to focus on the big picture and trust people.  When we look back at things with the perspective of time passed and wisdom, most of it ended up being small stuff." Foreman: "Give me one good reason I shouldn't fire you" Me: "There isn't one" Right then, I accepted my fate. For months, I had been arriving 20, 5, or 10 minutes late to work most days. The foreman had already warned me the previous week; I had a small window of turning up on time, then fell back into the hole. After an awkward silence from my response, he looked at me, grunted in frustration and bellowed, "Get to Work". To this day, I believe he was expecting some half-arsed excuse. If I did, he would have marched me out of there. I am 100% certain of this The next day and every other day I worked at this sheet metal factory, I was never late again. At the time, I was 22 and had just packed up all my meagre belongings into my Holden VC Commodore, with a 1-way ticket on the Spirit of Tasmania for Victoria and a new chapter. What did I learn from this experience? 1) 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: I know it saved my job, and from that moment forward, when making mistakes or errors, I hold myself accountable. 2) 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Excuses are talk, and it replaces action.  I needed to take action to ensure I was getting to work on time.  What were all the impediments to me being up on time These two lessons would be invaluable before I round the corner of age 23. #growthmindset #personaldevelopment #career

Together, they tackle a challenging task, completed with unwavering safety and coordination. In this scene, one can see the parallels to a well-structured team: the manager, supervisor, foreman, engineer, safety officer, laborers, and riggers...all playing their vital roles in unison. For those who pause to reflect, this is more than just a depiction of ants at work; it is a powerful metaphor for effective teamwork and leadership.

Some advice stings at first and over time it becomes profound. I apprenticed with Ed the pipefitter for a couple of years and he told me many times "Jesse, you just gotta be smarter than the pipe" and it pissed me off every time he said it. But he was right. Every time he said it I was stuck on one of the following: - making a decision - asking for help - utilizing my resources - worried about what people might say Fast forward 20+ years and his advice stands true, when I get stuck on the small stuff all I gotta do is make a decision and go with it. Cuz I am smarter than the problem Im facing. Build meaningfully. Recently I reconnected with a high-level ops individual at a General Contractor in the area. When we first met? They worked at a different GC, and an opportunity to partner wasn’t available. But we both valued authentic relationships and stayed connected. Now? They’re at different company That has different opportunities And they influence decision-making This year's crewman is next year's superintendent. And you'll need a favor from them on site. This year's project engineer is next year's project manager. And they’ll be buying out a job you're pursuing. One day as I was walking around my home 🏡town, I saw a group of men tearing a building down. With a “heave” and a “ho” and a mighty yell, they swung a huge steel ball and a tall building fell🧱 I then questioned the foreman, "Are your men competent? If you were going to build, are these the people you would hire? He chuckled, saying, "Oh no, indeed! All I need are unskilled workers.”👨🏭 📍"What it takes skilled builders years to do, these men can easily wreck in a day or two." And as I turned to leave, I thought to myself, Which of these parts do I want to play?🤔 👉🏻Do I want to spend my life spreading negativity and be recognized as someone who always brings people down? 👉🏻Or do I want to have a reputation for carefully and skillfully building things, so that my colleagues will constantly be appreciative of my presence?
