Over the years, I've heard people have different opinions about the Nigeria Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This I can say, that the NYSC scheme is a home of opportunities, even a pride of opportunities. They range from meeting brilliant minds and innovative creators from divers ends of the country to finding grounds where one's dreams and prowess can be harnessed.
Of all, I'm grateful that for one thing, I was not dozing off when certain representatives from the Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Mind The Gap initiative came to *sensitize* us about the Digital Literacy Programme on Saturday, 7th September, at the Abuja NYSC orientation camp. Not only did I hear about it, but I'm now one of the privileged 100 Digital Literacy Champions selected out of the over 150 Corp members who initially showed interest in joining the scheme.
Digital literacy, in simple terms, is the ability to utilise computer and technical tools to creatively meet needs, ease daily undertakings, and solve problems.
I'm opportune to be a part of the pioneering set of the special CDS group with the goal of achieving 70% from the current 56% digital literacy level in Nigeria by 2027. Our responsibilities includes empowering the informal sector of the Nigerian workforce to be digitally inclined, enabling citizens to have access to remote jobs online, and making life easier for the commonest of all.
For a start, we were enrolled in a 3-days empowerment training which took place from 8th September to 10th September, 2024 at the orientation camp with learned facilitators such as Mr. Osamwonyi O. Bright and Miss Daramola Mercy who daily yoked us with the burden in the heart of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian government. Simultaneously, we completed six intensive online courses on digital literacy that we had access to for free. Also, we had our first demonstration of reaching out to a sector of the target populace, which include; Market sellers, transport men, food vendors, and other informal wokers. We set out to the "Mami" market in the orientation camp for a try, and it was a blessing.
This journey has been a preparation for an intentional and impactful one year or perhaps more ahead of us.
