People living in Medway and Swale are being encouraged to sign up and become Research Friends of Medway NHS Foundation Trust. Laura Adams, Patient and Public Engagement and Involvement (PPIE) facilitator for Research and Innovation, said: “Evidence shows that research active trusts, like Medway NHS Foundation Trust, deliver a higher quality of care to their patients. That’s because through research we can offer treatments that otherwise would not be available and ensure we are offering the most up-to-date treatments to patients. “We want to place research at the heart of everything we do. In 2017, National Physicians Week highlighted the shortage of physicians in the United States against a growing landscape of minorities joining the ranks. "In hindsight, I am proud of what we have accomplished in a short period of time, including raising the recognition of our group and spotlighting the years of sacrifice by those in our profession to serve our patients. The Holiday Weekend As we are entering the Memorial Holiday weekend in the States, I would like to extend my thanks and encouragement to all my pharmacy colleagues who will be serving their patients and communities over this long weekend.  There will likely be a few situations that you have to deal with which most people will not understand. I can recall one such weekend where on a Saturday morning when a patient called me who was visiting from out of town.  Within about 3 sentences, her voice went from upbeat and chipper to all out tears as she admitted she came to town to visit family and left her medicine at home over 200 miles away.  She knew only the most general things about her medicines.  For example, she knew the ballpark name of her medications, but not the dose or frequency.  (“I take something for blood pressure that starts with an ‘L’ and it may be 20/25mg?”) My next few hours were set as I was now on a safari to figure these things out. Once the situation was figured out, the patient expressed great gratitude. The thing is, far too few people know what a pharmacy is like on a weekend like this.  Your boss likely doesn’t know and may not even want to know.  But we know the adventures that await us on long holiday weekends. Here’s an update on virtual wards #HospitalatHome from a recent VW Convenzis Group conference we attended. Do get in touch if you wish to know more on how to scale safely across a large geographic region and create maximum impact.

As we reflect on the meeting co-chaired by THOR Network Foundation and The Allo Hope Foundation, a few things are clear. ✨ This meeting (and the extensive preparation that went in to it) provide an ideal model for establishing clinical care guidelines, with patients at the center of the discussion, and all stakeholders present at the table. ✨ Systematic reviews and original research are critical tools for understanding the breadth and strength of available evidence and filling gaps to establish evidence-based clinical care guidelines.   ✨ These groups were able to bring about incredible progress in establishing guidelines that will benefit patients receiving blood transfusions, and those with alloimmunization and HDFN. Much of the credit goes to Phil Spinella, Molly Sherwood, Bethany Weathersby, and Katie Shanahan for elevating these issues and bringing all the pieces together. It was incredible to see your dedication and expertise throughout the discussion.
