I auditioned for The Voice. Twice actually. 2015: Chicago, IL 2017: Las Vegas, NV I saw that The Voice was hosting auditions near me so I thought, “Meh, why not? What’s the worst that can happen?” So I signed up to give it a shot! Both times I got to the arena around 3:00AM to stand in line and wait for my turn to audition. The first time, my Dad actually came with me and stood outside in 15° temps outside on the lake front in Chicago to come with me. He’s the absolute best (story for another day.) There were tens upon thousands of people auditioning and waiting to showcase their talent. In fact, there were over 10,000 people auditioning for 4 open call spots. I wasn’t expecting to make it. But what I was expecting was to have a good experience. And that is exactly what happened. I met countless people from all walks of life, from all over the world hoping that this would be “their shot.” It was incredible. It’s funny, some people will ask me “Well, why’d you do it?” Insinuating that I shouldn’t have tried if I didn’t my expect to make it. And my response is simply, “I don’t know, I just wanted to.” There was no harm in trying. I didn’t lose anything from it. It looked fun. So why not? In fact, I gained the confidence to go on do random things as my heart desires from this experience with no expectation of result or reward or judgement. We put too much emphasis on the end result which usually feels hollow. Rather than finding fulfillment in the journey along the way. I was tell people If you want life to be exciting, you have to do exciting things. Adopt the mindset of: • “So what?” • “What’s the worst that can happen?” • “I don’t know, but I know I’m down to try.” And suddenly life becomes a lot more fun. So go do something fun. • Go sign up for a half marathon • Put your two weeks in and change jobs • Heck move to Indiana on a whim Just focus on the experience and not the end result. What if stage fright really comes from the body not knowing if the audience is safe for you? Yesterday evening was the 3rd story telling night in my hometown and it was my 2nd time participating. What will your story be about tonight? Me: relationships. turns out, all my stories are about relationships. still nervous but I would say stage fright went down 50%. what helped? Nervous System Harmonisation. The first seconds standing on the podest, I said nothing. I looked into the audience, connected, saw how they looked at me, we had a connection. Then, I noticed how joyful and supportive the faces were: No Threat. Only then, I started sharing my story. You would not want to share a vulnerable story to a threatening audience, maybe that is the reason why many fear stages. It is different if you know that the audience WANTS to see you succeed. Its a different form of thriving and growing if you know that others stand in your corner cheering you on! Before my talk, I observed several speakers as they stepped on the podium and started talking even before they fully arrived. I wondered how nervous or stressed they were feeling. There's one really quick and effective way I like to get feedback on my live sessions. (And I bet Kamala Harris used it to prep for her debate.) ✨It's watching yourself on camera.✨ If you are like me, you may cringe at the idea of seeing yourself on camera. But once you get past the awkwardness there's real gold in that replay! Watching myself on recordings helps me catch things I miss in the moment - like those "OK, um" fillers. Wandering eyes. One time I even noticed my glasses were crooked. 😅 I also catch big-picture stuff like the energy level. The overall flow of the session. And where things speed up or drag on. Here's the thing: it's easy to fall into a spiral of self-criticism (I'm still working on that). One thing that's helped me is to think more like a detective. 🔎 Focus on a few specific areas you want to improve. And look out for clues that will help you hone your skills and confidence. I've been voice acting for two years now. Here’s what I’ve learned so far: 1️⃣ Mindset is everything: I have to treat every audition as a step forward, even if it doesn’t go my way (and it usually doesn't). Every minute at the mic is a chance to learn and grow, and have fun 😉. 2️⃣ Consistency pays off: I’m showing up every day, putting in the work, even when the progress feels slow (and, boy, does it feel slow sometimes). ⌚️ 3️⃣ Feedback is fuel: I see critism as a guide to improvement. Criticism can be blunt and hard to swallow. Honestly, there are rare occasions where it really pisses me off. But what may seem like a rude comment is usually just someone trying to help out. 🙂 4️⃣ Mouth noise is... is... ... It just really sucks. I don't have a single good thing to say about mouth noise. The best take will always have a stupid click right in the middle of a word. 🙄 🥾 So, yeah, this journey has its challenges, but I’m committed to pushing through. (TL; DR: I don’t the week judging kids, now I’m judging myself) I’m back in my comfortable place but more self aware than I’ve been in a long time. I spent a couple of days this week scoring Video News Production at the SkillsUSA NLSC. Now I’m more aware of the things I do. The students had a rundown and a script but I’m going a live event so the little things in my communication are more important. I noticed the student directors were going through the motions when it came to preparing their talent. Simply saying “ready 1” to say it… there were no real intentions when they did it. I am more aware than ever this morning when I’m setting up my shots that going through the motions isn’t what’s needed. Instead quick direct communication will make my team more successful. Which leads me to the other point that I took from my experience this week, communicate a little as possible. Several times this week, teams would make a decision and the team would repeat it several times. The problem was that none of the team was actually listening or processing the message they were all delivering. They were simply wasting time saying the same thing 4 or 5 times. Often we make a decision in a show and want everyone to know it but at the cost of effective use of time. The leadership hierarchy is an essential tool that is often overlooked in the heat of a broadcast. The teams this week were under a time crunch for what some felt were the biggest challenge in their life. As I approach my show this morning, I don’t have those pressures but again am aware that my communication is the direction that means most because I have to make sure the cameras are not only where they need to be but also that they know what I’m going to do immediately as well as in shots to come. Talking with a team of 5-6 people who volunteer to get out of their comfort zone is a challenge in itself- I have to make sure that I don’t get too in the weeds with jargon and when I do quickly explain. This week was great for me. It made me think, if I were scoring myself what score would I give myself.

We're all chasing the perfect rep, like kids after an ice-cream truck on a summer day. But let's face the hard truth: business reputation is as enduring as it is elusive. • Ask yourself: What narrative am I crafting? Is it compelling? Authentic? 📜 • Reflect on feedback. It may sting like a wasp or sing like a lark; either way, it's valuable data.🐝🎶 • Turn mistakes into teaching moments. We've all tripped on that proverbial banana peel. How swiftly and gracefully you bounce back reveals more about you than the trip-up itself. 🍌 So, let's remember, in this wild safari of business reputation, it's not the lion's roar but the journey itself that speaks volumes. As they say in showbiz - break a leg, my friends! 🦁🎭
