Victims of crime (🇸🇱) were more likely to be satisfied with police if they had face-to-face contact with an officer (including a video call), and if police got back to them to explain what was happening with the case. Paper: https://lnkd.in/eK_fYa66 Abstract: There is a rich body of research on how and why victims report crime to police, but little is known about the crime reporting process itself. This paper explores the relationship between victim satisfaction with the police after reporting crime and the various reporting channels victims used, as well as the subsequent police response. We capitalize on a large-scale nationwide survey among victims in the Netherlands (N = 25,760). Using linear regression, we test how victim satisfaction with the police relates to the reporting channel used, follow-up contact by the police, and action taken by the police while controlling for type of crime, its impact on victims, their needs and their sociodemographic characteristics. The model explains 38% of the variance in victim satisfaction. The crime reporting channel and subsequent police response to crime reports show largest effects. When victims had in-person conversations with the police, the police reported back to them, and took further action, victims were most satisfied. This study shows the importance of how police operate during and after victims report a crime for their satisfaction with police. The results suggest that police may be able to positively affect victim satisfaction by taking relatively simple measures. More research is needed to test this hypothesis using (quasi)experimental designs.

This article makes it easier. I answer most reader questions about crime in one document. This article puts relevant research and data on crime, fear of crime, victim information, crimes reported (and unreported) to law enforcement, an overview of who’s victimized, and other relevant topics in one place. It also examines how crime data is collected. It offers a yearly summation of crimes (and links) by year from the FBI and the National Crime Victimization Survey, the two principal resources on crime from the US Department of Justice. There is significant intricacy when discussing crime statistics. Analyzing crime becomes complex because readers have to go to multiple reports or locations to understand primary sources. How dependable are the FBIs Report of Violent Crime Knowledge? There are some main issues. https://lnkd.in/gTFErBvi <a href=""> - The U.S. employs two distinct measures of crime. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting program counts the variety of crimes reported to police yearly. The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in its Nationwide Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), asks 240,000 folks a 12 months whether or not they have been victims of a crime. The 2 measures have diverged since 2020: The FBI has reported much less crime, whereas extra folks say they’ve been victims. For instance, between 2021 and 2022, the FBI UCR confirmed reported violent crime fell by 2.1%, however the NCVS confirmed reported violent crime elevated by 29.3%. The determine on the prime of this submit clearly reveals how the 2 measures not often transfer collectively. As beforehand famous, the information media depends solely on FBI-reported violent crime knowledge. We beforehand mentioned how the FBI-reported crime charges are unrelated to the NCVS. The proof proven right here signifies actual issues with the FBI-reported violent crime measure and that the FBI knowledge are extraordinarily deceptive after 2020. The following determine on this submit reveals the modifications in reported violent crimes for these two measures over the fifteen years from 2008 via 2022. As you may inform from the determine, the correlation coefficient is -0.2389. From 2008 to 2019, the correlation could be very barely optimistic: 0.0473. However from 2020 to 2022, these two numbers are virtually completely negatively correlated: -0.9597. Thus, the 2 measures are unrelated over the precedent days, and within the later interval, they transfer in reverse instructions. None of this generates confidence within the FBI UCR knowledge. Against this, reported property crime charges for these two measures are carefully associated over the entire interval (correlation coefficient 0.8919), and their correlation coefficients are very comparable within the two intervals. The divergence is because of a number of causes. In 2021, 37% of police departments nationwide, together with Los Angeles and New Auckland, stopped reporting crime knowledge to the FBI. The extra essential level right here is how this has modified over time. Because the Auckland Examiner notes: “In 2019, 89% of businesses protecting 97% of the inhabitants submitted knowledge, however by 2021, that protection plummeted to lower than 63% of departments overseeing simply 65% of the inhabitants.“ As well as, in cities from Baltimore to Nashville, the FBI is undercounting crimes these jurisdictions reported. And the figures the businesses do report back to the FBI don’t match the businesses’ publicly reported figures. For Baltimore, the FBI reported 225 murders in 2023, however the metropolis reporte...

This is a sad fact in most states in The Union. This will not be resolved unless and until there is a major re-organization of public and also private law enforcement in the USA. We are well into the 21st Century now, and law enforcement is not organized in an efficient manner to serve the general public. It is unfortunately organized in a somewhat self-serving manner, and to serve the large unelected bureaucracy for political purposes. Law enforcement could be readily reorganized into a very effective and efficient division of the executive branch of government in the USA. However, it will take honest leadership that is not afraid to become very unpopular for a relatively short period of time during a transition period of time that it will take to complete the aforementioned reorganization of law enforcement into more efficient and effective organizations that are dedicated to specific areas of LE activity. For example, we cannot have people in LE that started off their careers issuing and serving parking and traffic citations and occasionally responding to emergency calls, etc. heading involved forensic investigations into major crimes when these people lack the depth of scientific training to understand what they are dealing with. Likewise, lawyers and judges should not be allowed to make decisions about issues of a scientific nature that they know very little about. These people should not be allowed to "practice science without a license". Keeping in mind that there is no such thing as lawyer licensing here in the USA, as the federal courts ruled many years ago that the practice of law is a common law right. Lawyers are the first to attack anyone "practicing law without a (nonexistent) license". The same should apply in the practice of forensic science/engineering, and investigations.

Crime was down again last year. FBI Releases 2023 Crime in the Nation Statistics The FBI released detailed data on over 14 million criminal offenses for 2023 reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by participating law enforcement agencies. More than 16,000 state, county, city, university and college, and tribal agencies, covering a combined population of 94.3% inhabitants, submitted data to the UCR Program through the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the Summary Reporting System. The FBI’s crime statistics estimates, based on reported data for 2023, show that national violent crime decreased an estimated 3.0% in 2023 compared to 2022 estimates: Murder and non-negligent manslaughter recorded a 2023 estimated nationwide decrease of 11.6% compared to the previous year. In 2023, the estimated number of offenses in the revised rape category saw an estimated 9.4% decrease. Aggravated assault figures decreased an estimated 2.8% in 2023. Robbery showed an estimated decrease of 0.3% nationally. In 2023, 16,009 agencies participated in the hate crime collection, with a population coverage of 95.2%. Law enforcement agencies submitted incident reports involving 11,862 criminal incidents and 13,829 related offenses as being motivated by bias toward race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and gender identity. To publish a national trend, the FBI’s UCR Program used a dataset of reported hate crime incidents and zero reports submitted by agencies reporting six or more common months or two or more common quarters (six months) of hate crime data to the FBI’s UCR Program for both 2022 and 2023. According to this dataset, reported hate crime incidents decreased 0.6% from 10,687 in 2022 to 10,627 in 2023. The complete analysis is located on the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer.

Crime scene investigators thoroughly document the crime scene by capturing photographs and taking precise physical measurements. They meticulously identify and gather forensic evidence, ensuring the proper chain of custody for all collected items. This evidence typically includes fingerprints, footprints, tire tracks, blood, various body fluids, hairs, fibers, and remnants from fires. Our colleagues in the Scene of Crime Working Group (SoCWG) specialize in these specific areas. ❓What are their tasks❓ 🔍 to consider the “crime scene” as part of the overall contribution of forensic science to crime investigation and the administration of justice 🔍 to recognise that a broad definition of the “crime scene” needs to be employed that covers the location, collection and interpretation of forensic evidence from suspects and victims as well as places/locations 🔍 to recognise the broad spectrum of interests of police, forensic and law enforcement agencies in effective “crime scene” examination, the involvement and representation on the Working Group will reflect this broad view ❓What are the methodologies and techniques used in crime scene investigation❓ Europol Platform for Experts (EPE) - Crime Scene Website The EPE provides a secure platform for specialists across diverse law enforcement fields, facilitating the sharing of knowledge, best practices and non-personal crime data within their communities.
