I still remember the good old days when we used to have multiple devices – an alarm clock, a handy camera, and a phone that was only good for making calls. Now, all of these devices, and more, are amalgamated into smartphones. I believe the exact same thing is happening in healthcare. A lot of the industry disruptors, the new players coming in, have a huge distribution strength and a huge customer base built-in, which will become their member base. To top it off, they are already adept in low-cost of operations. That’s going to put pressure on the traditional players – so a change is bound to happen. And, in my view, this change will be consolidation in terms of how technology is leveraged. For traditional players, it will be crucial to look at the entire value chain, from membership acquisition to membership retention. Digital transformation cannot be limited to an application or just a particular space – it is time to look at it more holistically. #DigitalHealth #HealthTech #HealthcareInnovation #SutherlandHealthcare

Rethink Technology Research has begun work on a new data set that will chart the next decade for operators. Evolving from our Crash of 2033 vision paper, the thesis is that the emerging generation of consumers will be truly smartphone-centric - leaving the big screen behind. This will have tumultuous impacts in the media and entertainment industry, but for the operators that provide the connectivity that powers this media consumption, the shift toward smartphones becomes quite dicey. The Venn diagram overlaps between fixed-line and mobile services is nearly complete, with very few examples of operators that are not triple-play providers. Despite industry narratives, capex is on an upwards trajectory (at least in our initial examination of North America), but the operating expenses are creeping ever upwards towards core revenue, which could have disastrous consequences for unprepared operators. Consumer sentiment makes parting them with their dollars difficult, and early results from 5G have been disappointing, to say the least. “Do you need help with that smartphone? These gadgets can be so complicated.” Older people may be stereotyped as being resistant to change, not tech-savvy or having inevitable cognitive decline. However, not only do older people commonly use digital technology to keep in touch with family and friends, some research has shown that up to 80% use it to access medical information. Don't make assumptions! Treat each elderly patient as an individual with unique needs and preferences, rather than stereotyping based on age. #healthcare #healthequity #eldercare

Isn't it funny in a tragic way that our consumer tech was supposed to help us be efficient and decrease the noise but it's only led to more beeps and alerts. 800 #UnreadEmails 40+ unread LinkedIn messages & #connections 5 #notifications from the kids' school app Your smartwatch nags your wrist and pulls your focus every minute. 🚨 🔔 The general public is now dealing with the #AlertFatigue healthcare staff have dealt with since tech became forever intertwined with healthcare. No wonder why a loud minority, Gen Z, want #dumbphones. Long live the RAZR and Nokia 3210. ✊🏿 They want to silence the noise and focus. While I don't think healthcare will or should put the tech genie back in the bottle, it is still something to think about. There are too many laws, regulations, and meaningful tools that make healthcare inseparable from tech. #1999IsNeverComingBack. My generation of healthcare providers and clinicians only know this new world for better or worse. #ThinkingOutLoudThursday #NursesOnLinkedin
