🫂 We don’t win another person over by attacking their (mis)belief. We do so by #empathy. That’s a valuable lesson for any #transformation effort, organisational or personal: winning hearts and minds. 💫 I learned from Dan Ariely in the conversation with Aidan McCullen (https://lnkd.in/g7BDJriS) about: 😶🌫️ Misbelief 😎 It is like an auto-immune disease, triggered by stressors, a reaction arising from our need to create a sense of control. One can invent a complex story with a villain to shift the blame and regain control. It is attacking everything: emotion, cognition (irrational, bias), personality (susceptibility), social structure (ostracism). Corrosive information is the fuel, causing addiction. ⛽️🔥 🫴 Why empathy, a cure for misbelief? 💊 Like ellen langer used to say: Nobody wakes up in the morning says, today I’m going to be annoying, mean and clumsy (or any other undesirable combination). So, when they do, we need ask why they do what they do. Similarly, someone has a reason for adopting a certain (mis)belief. ❓ Recognise the gap between what people (really) know and what people believe (they think they know). When we empathise we try to understand and bridge this gap. 🌉 🧠 Memory shapes belief 💭 Memory is the greatest conman of human nature. We overly trust memory when we shouldn’t. We feel we really have it when in fact we don’t. It is easy to plant and distort memory. Different people remember differently. When something fits our intuition we trust it without question or testing. 🙈🙉🙊 My 2️⃣ takeaways: 👾 Perhaps #AI can help validate our memory and belief, helping humans realise why we do what we do, what we should and shouldn’t do. A smart “assumption checker”, “misbelief detector” will be great. Maybe that’s one possible future of #SentimentAnalysis. 🧗♂️ The most difficult thing in any transformation effort is not redesigning the #process or integrating the #innovation, but changing the #mindset and shaping the #culture. The latter will make or break the former. #ChangeManagement #BehaviouralChange

Is there a desirable unknown? Can we orient towards loving, transparent, healthy infrastructures, interactions, and means of movement? What does that mean and how do we find the energy to open our physical, mental, social, academic, and emotional geographies beyond current dichotomies and assumptions? These are some of the subjects of my recent conversations for Love & Philosophy, the Desirable Unknown, and the Ecological Motoring Initiative. It's been said we can only imagine what we know; The Desirable Unknown and Love & Philosophy are about expanding that topography. At times in these recent conversations (and during many others for the channel), I've experienced what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi discussed as a state of #flow. These are states we usually discuss through modes such as sports, or our connection with #nature, and while both of those are intensely meaningful and important, I also find it uplifting that this same sense of openness and #connection can manifest (at least in moments) in areas that can be harder to maintain presence within, such as our work lives or within challenging conversations. There are so many out there doing important work towards positive change, and I'd love to connect that community. Though the challenges are real and stark, so too is the authenticity and desire to help, nurture, and create better forms of transportation, communication, ideation and technology. I'd like to share these conversations with you and to hear your stories of others (at any stage in their career or project) who are finding meaningful ways to reorient towards a better future and exploring new ways to connect beyond traditional boundaries (please feel free to email me at andrea@ecologicalmotoring.com). Over the last few weeks, I've had the honor to engage with the unique perspectives, work, and research of individuals such as Iain McGilchrist, Craig Callender, Richard Watson, Michael Levin, Carlos Zapata-Carratalá, Timo Schuler and Cari Taylor.
