When intuition is no longer good enough When start-ups are small, founders and leaders tend to be deeply involved in each new hire, relying on their personal network to hire new talent. As companies grow, however, talent needs to inevitably change, skills gaps become more apparent, and it becomes more difficult for founders and leaders to stay as personally involved in the recruiting process. At the same time, intuition is no longer good enough and professional support is needed from either internal or external HR resources. And when start-ups enter a period of more significant hiring, founder CEOs and their teams may need to rethink how the HR operating model attracts, hires, and onboards talent at scale to become more formal about talent planning and recruiting. As a good first step, they should systematically review their ambitions and plans to scale against the skills, capabilities, and behaviors required to do so. They can then compare those plans against the current overall talent mix and identify existing or expected gaps. Bringing new talent into sales, marketing, production, and compliance teams may help scaling start-ups identify and lock in new accounts more quickly or ramp up production at a faster pace.
