How can we advocate for better content, more usable websites and digital products and services that are good experiences rather than a pain? One way is to use evidence of reality and how starting with user needs turns a strategy into delivery. As just one example, a company might think that getting AI to produce lots of content, or lots of paid links, or even still cramming in keywords will get them to the top of Google rankings. The company might even produce a new SEO strategy based on all of the totally not-recommended SEO practices. What the company might not do is think of SEO as being something that comes out of user needs-based content design and strategy. Using evidence of reality can help shift the conversation away from SEO strategy as a separate thing, and away from potentially unethical actions. For example: - Google's updated algorithms actually penalise AI-generated material and value trusted authors of good content - AI-powered tools mean that people may be able to get what they need from search results rather than webpages - content needs to be well-researched and have plenty of insights to get into search engine rankings Providing valuable content that reaches the right person at the right time in the right place online is what content design and content strategy does really, really well. Starting with user needs allows companies and any organisation or individual to discover what people really need and what tasks their website should focus on. As proof, you might provide examples in the UK alone from: GOV.UK, Citizens Advice, Shelter, University of Southampton and University of Edinburgh. And so, generic content begone.
