VNC LP#526 Impacts of Micromobility Micromobility is having a big impact on cities. In Sweden, it took e-scooter companies only 31 weeks to get 31 million users, which is 10% of total road traffic. Micromobility can reduce traffic congestion and pollution: e-scooter rides are already replacing car usage, and one ride can mitigate CO2 emissions 5-10 times more than a car trip. Micromobility complements public transportation: 27% of e-scooter rides are used to get to or from public transportation stations. Micromobility is convenient for short trips: 58.5% of car trips are less than 8 kilometres, which is a perfect distance for e-scooters. Micromobility is space-efficient: one converted car parking space can fit up to 10 bikes. Micromobility is safe and orderly: 98% of e-scooters in Germany are parked correctly. EIT Urban Mobility

Happy to have contributed to this paper discussing the e-bike sharing system in Dublin, its performance, emissions saving profile, and scalability potential. This research, conducted at Trinity College Dublin, involved collaboration with Brian Caulfield, Margaret O'Mahony, Keyvan Hosseini, and Tushar Pramod Choudhari. The study is part of the eHUBS NWE project funded by Interreg North-West Europe (NWE). We studied an e-bike sharing system comprising 12 eHUBs placed around the M50 motorway in Dublin. This study was based on six months of real-world GPS data and used an evaluation framework employing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Below are our findings: 📌 The performance of e-bike sharing stations improves with time ➡We found an upward trajectory for the system’s eco-efficiency as measured by the DEA model. 📌 Expanding the e-bike sharing system, along with infrastructural enhancements, would increase ridership ➡We used the returns-to-scale analysis to determine the system’s scalability. We found that the majority of stations exhibit increasing returns-to-scale (IRS) properties, which suggests that as a shared mobility hub expands, it can offer transportation services more efficiently, potentially increasing riders and ridership and reducing per-user costs. (Returns-to-scale is used to explore the relationship between the scale of service provision (inputs) and its impact on efficiency and costs (outputs).) 📌 E-bikes contribute more to carbon savings than EVs ➡This is intuitive and confirmed for a scenario with one-third penetration of EVs in the 2030 Irish fleet. It calls for a significant shift in travel behaviour and support at various levels – governmental, commercial, and individual. 📌 Infrastructure is important ➡We confirmed a link between the adoption of shared e-bikes and the presence of nearby bike lanes. 📌 Using e-bikes was associated with non-leisure travel ➡We found the majority of trips using the e-bike sharing system took place on weekdays, during and between the morning and evening peak hours.
