There's a certain SEO tendency we've been observing on the market for the last year or so. A large chunk of all the marketing requests we get these days are from SMBs that have no interest in SEO either because of their poor experience with previous vendors (who very often promised the moon and the stars, but almost never delivered against the KPIs), or because they read somewhere or heard from someone that SEO is too complex and is not worth it. This is why these prospects are shopping for any kind of marketing or advertising solution, but SEO. One of the most frequent questions we ask our prospects during the discovery call is: "Have you ever considered SEO?", to which they usually say something like: "We had someone (usually a freelancer or an agency) do this for us, but it never worked." The reason why "it never worked" is directly related to how much these companies spent on SEO (and usually that's $500-$1,000 per month). Based on our experience, we'd like to share some insights on how much businesses spend on SEO and what to expect. $1,000 or less/month - A lot of businesses allocate this much for SEO,but when it comes to measuring the ROI - what they all get is zero, nada, zilch. $2,000 -3,000/month - Many single location businesses invest this much. If your marketing goals are not too aggressive, you can expect an ROI with this kind of budget. $3,000 - $5,000 - This is where SEO becomes a self-sufficient marketing channel. $10,000/month - Here your multi-location business ROI becomes very impactful. $20,000 - $50,000 - Companies investing this much usually dominate the local and national markets. $50,000 - $100,000 - Your ROI is so impressive here that you want to give up any other form of marketing or advertising. What the Next 12 Months Looks Like in SEO. Here's the good news. SEO is still going to be a thing. Here's the bad news...most are going to struggle with generating results if they keep using the same tired approaches. The old way of SEO is done. I've spent the last 6 months building a new approach and processes for what does work. Because like it or not, the delivery of SEO is a key part in agency or in-house profitability. And the 5 blog posts a month model plus a few links you purchased from vendors is done. So what's in. 1. More strategy. Think slow, deliver fast. Search needs more understanding of intent and this means more head work by SEOs. 2. More care, less volume. Shovelling words on a page won't cut it. Information gain rate is where it is. 3. Authority building not link building. Authority is not links. Building brands is part of SEO. Call it your digital footprints or whatever you want. Think about how you as an SEO can build your brand online, not only links. The final thing. Expect Google to evolve and make old SEO processes obsolete. Yeah, your recent batch of links you paid for might have moved the needle a little, so you ordered more. But expect another massive Linkspam update to drop that will make previous ones look like a warm up. Spambrain is only going to get more powerful. How is our new approach working? I emailed 2 clients this week to let them know they reached position 1, page 1 for their target main keywords. One who was 50% year on year down on traffic. So, it's working.
