AI can now detect whether chemotherapy before surgery will benefit breast cancer patients. Every 14 seconds, somewhere in the world, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. 1 in 39 women die because of it. One of the biggest reasons for this is that determining the right treatment for these patients is highly challenging. In many cases, doctors suggest pre-operative chemotherapy to shrink cancer to make surgery possible or avoid major surgeries like mastectomies. However, it's not always effective, as the success rate often depends on tumor cell features like genes and proteins. Yet, many patients still undergo it, because they are hopeful. The challenge is that this treatment comes with its fair share of side effects, both short-term and long-term. In the short term, women have to go through: - Fatigue - Diarrhea - Hair loss - Mouth sores - Weight changes - Nausea and vomiting The long-term side effects are more disastrous like heart damage, bone thinning and infertility. This is why engineers at the University of Waterloo, part of the open-source Cancer-Net initiative led by Dr. Alexander Wong, have designed a new AI model. They have developed a specialized MRI technique called synthetic correlated diffusion imaging (CDI). They’ve trained the AI model with CDI images of past cancer patients and their outcomes. So when the CDI images of new patients are provided to the AI software, it can predict if the pre-operative chemotherapy would benefit them or not. This is exciting news as it will help doctors provide more personalised treatment to patients and lower mortality rates. What do you think of this breakthrough? #ai #cancer #healthcare

🩷Really happy to see some positive news today, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. ☹️Mammograms, albeit a life saving device, can be painful and not always accurate. The last thing someone needs is to have a painful experience that leaves them no closer to treatment. ⌛It's only a matter of time before new devices are introduced, and this one looks promising. CTs on flat tables aren't only more comfortable, but also give the DRs a 3D image, allowing more a more accurate rate of detection. https://lnkd.in/gqMbqYCX

AI Revolutionizes Pancreatic Cancer Detection and Treatment!! Researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center are leveraging AI and advanced imaging tools to detect pancreatic cancer early, even in precancerous stages. By using mini laser optical cameras during endoscopic ultrasounds, they perform "virtual biopsies" of cyst walls and analyze the footage with AI to pinpoint cancer risks in seconds—improving accuracy and reducing unnecessary surgeries. This innovation could save lives while sparing patients from invasive procedures and their complications, like diabetes and digestive issues. Dr. Somashekar Krishna has developed a minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation treatment to eliminate precancerous cysts without major surgery, providing a safer option for older or high-risk patients. These advancements enhance early detection and patient-focused care for pancreatic cancer. A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 14 seconds. It’s a sobering number, and many of us will know someone affected by it… I know I do. Ladies, do not forget to do your regular checks 🎗️ Despite this, mortality rates have fallen by 40% in high-income countries since 1980, and the global efforts to get that number down has not stopped! It's an inspiring story, and researchers like my incredible friend Professor Anne Vincent-Salomon are making strides in breast cancer treatment, from enhanced screenings to personalized therapies. I can’t help, but think about how virtual twins are helping industry and research in this process. French industrial start-up LATTICE MEDICAL for example - which was accelerated by our 3DEXPERIENCE Lab - uses Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform to support the development of their bioresorbable breast prostheses for mastectomy patients. The platform enables clinicians globally to design tailored implants and provide a 3D view of the patient before and after surgery. This Science Week, we’ll be exploring even more the role of the virtual world in advancing treatments and precision care - as well as our contribution to the exciting #MediTwin consortium - at the 10th International Virtual Human Twin Experience Symposium at Institut Pasteur 👉 https://go.3ds.com/dY4 I highly encourage you to join, and hear from Professors Laure Fournier and fabrice andre talk about the future of digital solutions in oncology.

#IDEA4RC aims to develop a federated #Data ecosystem for #RareCancers focusing on two groups of these cancers: soft tissue sarcoma and head and neck cancers. We have identified some research questions the data ecosystem would try to answer through interviews with sarcoma and head and neck cancer expert oncologists and a survey conducted among the IDEA4RC clinical partners. Among these questions the consortium will chose at least four pilot projects that will allow to test the platform. The research questions belong to four areas: ▶ description of the natural history of soft tissues sarcomas and head and neck cancers (how the rare cancer develops, progresses, possible association with other diseases, etc.). ▶ evaluation of prognostic factors and response to treatments. ▶ assessment of treatment effectiveness (systemic, radiotherapy, surgery, target therapy, immunotherapy, and possible combinations). ▶ quality of care (diagnostic and staging procedures, treatment strategies, follow-up, etc.). To discover more about the research questions we have selected, read the summary of the deliverable on our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/dssWWegH #EHDS #EuropeanHealthDataSpace

India has achieved its first robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate natural tissue reconstruction, a groundbreaking advancement in breast cancer care. A 33-year-old mother with a large, cancerous mass in her left breast underwent India’s first robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) with immediate reconstruction using a flap. Diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) following a biopsy, she benefitted from this innovative, minimally invasive procedure, marking a significant advancement in breast cancer care. The procedure was led by Dr. Sandeep Nayak in Bangalore. This breakthrough technique uses robotic technology to precisely remove cancerous tissue while preserving the nipple and the natural shape of the breast, offering superior cosmetic outcomes and faster recovery. This approach is especially beneficial for women with aggressive cancers like triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), providing a significant advancement in cancer care. Prostate cancer treatment depends on factors like the cancer's stage, the patient’s age, and overall health. Surgery is a common option, especially if the cancer is localized. A radical prostatectomy involves removing the prostate gland and some surrounding tissue to prevent the spread of cancer. This option can be effective but may carry risks like incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It can be delivered externally (external beam radiation) or internally through implanted radioactive seeds (brachytherapy). Radiation is often used in early stages or after surgery to ensure all cancer cells are destroyed. Hormone therapy reduces levels of male hormones (androgens) that fuel prostate cancer growth. It’s often used in advanced stages, or when surgery and radiation aren’t viable. Hormone therapy can help control cancer but doesn’t cure it. Emerging treatments like immunotherapy and targeted therapy are also showing promise, especially for advanced cases. Patients may combine these therapies for the best outcome. #ProstateCancer #CancerTreatment #MensHealth #HealthAwareness #ProstateSurgery #HormoneTherapy
