I left my corporate career, two months ago today, and took a promising local position that appeared to be an amazing opportunity for myself and my family. Quickly I found it to be a poor fit for many reasons, including what I saw as a lack of transparency in hiring verse what was actually delivered on once an employee.
I was lucky enough to have left my corporate position on the best terms possible. I gave an appropriate notice, I wrapped up all client interactions professionally, I provided exit feedback respectfully, I returned all assets immediately in like new condition; I would say I did everything as “by the book” as one could… And it benefited me soon thereafter.
Weeks into my new role I knew it wasn’t going to be a good fit on numerous levels. I luckily had maintained great relationships with leadership at my prior organization and felt comfortable in reaching out to let them know I made a grave mistake and would like to apply and return to the organization. I was met with elation and support, and assured I would be welcomed back with open arms. They weren’t exaggerating, the entire process, from submitting my application to my first day back, has been nothing but incredible.
Two take aways:
One, never underestimate the power of leaving a position professionally and respectfully. Not only will it be helpful in maintaining a professional network long term, but it may just be the thing that helps you to get where you are supposed to be.
Two, don’t be afraid to admit when you’re wrong, it’s ok to try something and realize it’s not for you. Failure comes in not trying at all, growth comes in taking the leap, no matter the outcome. Don’t complain about where you are, develop a solution and move forward, even if it means leaving a job six weeks in.
So grateful to be back where I belong, with Accenture.
