Today, I had the opportunity to attend a remarkable event by Cigniti Technologies, "Avoiding Bias and Building an Inclusive Future." It was inspiring to hear women leaders in tech discuss the rise of AI and the crucial role women play in this evolving landscape. Particularly, the emphasis on ethics and bias highlighted the importance of having women at the forefront of AI initiatives, especially women of color, to ensure diverse perspectives and unbiased data inputs. There are no women in the IT industry ❌ Don’t believe me? Just check the video below. 100% men! And no, I don’t think the woman with a foot for an arm, blurred in the background, counts. How many people think to specify their prompt enough to get a fair share of diversity and inclusion in their AI generated content? How do we stop the loop? I can identify as every prompt I’m feeding into the AI, but the results? Are they representing me? Hell no 🫣 I’m three weeks into prompting AI, once a day, to see if I will ever get a different result. So far, it’s not looking great. I'm preparing a couple of International Women's Day #iwd2024 presentations for talks I've been invited to give this year on the theme #supportingwomen. I thought it would be fun to use #AI to generate some images and have found that unless I explicitly request the woman to be the central figure in the images she is always portrayed as the lesser figure. In addition she is almost always in possession of a D cup set of breasts, in high heels, and dressed in tight or revealing clothing. I think these outcomes reveal how AI is a function of those building it (mostly male) and the quality of the data it has access to. Women are on the backfoot again! How can we ensure #equality for women in an AI infused world?
