#SpaceWeather, #Climatology, #Technology: "The European Space Agency’s Proba-3 mission comprises a pair of satellites that will orbit the sun to give an unprecedented view of its outer atmosphere, or corona. The aim is to help scientists improve their understanding of phenomena such as the solar wind and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). “We are still not sure how coronal mass ejections occur,” says Andrei Zhukov, the mission's principal investigator. “With Proba-3, we will be able to see CMEs at their birth, how they are occurring and the first steps of their acceleration and development. This will help us to understand better the physics”. It is complicated to study the corona because the star's core can be up to 1 million times brighter than it, making it tricky to image. On Earth, one way to study the corona is during a total solar eclipse, when the moon blocks out the sun's bright centre. However, eclipses are rare and offer only up to 10 minutes of study time. Instead, Proba-3 will place two satellites 150 metres apart in front of the sun, using lasers to autonomously maintain millimetre-accurate positioning. One satellite, known as the Occulter spacecraft, will cast a shadow, or eclipse, onto the Coronagraph spacecraft that will collect data via photodiodes filtered to measure different wavelengths of light. In future, this technology might be applied to the search for exoplanets, says Damien Galano, project manager of Proba-3. “NASA has studied a concept where instead of blocking the light from the sun to observe the corona, there would be a large occulter blocking the light from the stars, and then in the shadow, there would be a large telescope that then would be able to image directly exoplanets orbiting the sun.” – Learn more ➤https://lnkd.in/evuRZu4h... ..." ~ "@LadyPioneer77 1 day ago So this was the technology used to create the April 8th 'eclipse'?"?! ;-]

“Multi-orbit” often means solving different challenges and creating different outcomes for SES’s diverse mix of customers. Here, we demonstrate the value of LEO to MEO RF relay for TT&C and data downlink with our partners at #PlanetLabs. This will eventually enable faster satellite tasking, rapid downlink for time-sensitive imaging data, quicker insights & ultimately better decision making. #NASA #SES #multiorbit Building the future one step at a time.

𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲. When satellites are sent into space, there’s no second chance. A faulty antenna could leave a multi-million-dollar spacecraft stranded in orbit, unable to deliver the connectivity it was designed for. The key to success: Antenna testing. For projects with plans for a vast constellation of satellites working in harmony, testing antennas is more than important. With precise measurement systems and advanced testing protocols, engineers can identify and resolve issues long before satellites leave the ground, safeguarding each satellite and its mission. Read about a case in point: https://lnkd.in/ehhEZJ93 MVG state-of-the-art test solutions provide the tools needed to validate antenna designs, helping teams deploy satellites with full confidence. There's no end to demand for connectivity says the opening session; "Investing in Growth" panel at #satshow 2024. Gwynne Shotwell of SpaceX says in space communications is something they are excited about. SpaceX is not focused on an IPO for Starlink. Others pointed out many use cases from connecting the unconnected, rural solutions, maritime, aviation, government, and more. John Gedmark of Astranis Space Technologies says they will launch more GEO satellites this year than any other company and dedicated secure satellite networks. Dan Goldberg says we will be waiting a while longer for Telesat's, Lightspeed but the demand will be there and the investment strategy remains consistent. Adel Al-Saleh of SES Satellites is excited about interconnectivity between satellites in different orbits including LEO, GEO and MEO. David Wajsgras of Intelsat is focused on a terminal strategy and multi-orbit offerings. Eva Berneke of Eutelsat OneWeb says land mobility is an important focus.

Machine-to-machine c2, collaborative platform autonomy, and pLEO SSA are my jam. Here we have a paper discussing China’s approach to SSA: “China has mitigated the impact of this constraint by prioritizing SSA satellites in LEO that operate autonomously and watch LEO, over SSA satellites dedicated to GEO.”
