" The exercise at #CampStoneman, near #Pittsburg, #CA, was one of many in a years-long program conducted by a key military research facility, headquartered at a #Navy shipyard in a predominantly Black working-class neighborhood in #SanFrancisco...between 1946 and 1963, lab scientists knowingly exposed at least 1,073 servicemen, dockworkers, lab employees and others to potentially harmful #radiation through war games, decontamination tests and medical studies...the lab’s work and decades of warship repair left the shipyard, which the Navy vacated in 1974, one of the most polluted sites in the country. #EPA deemed it a #Superfund site in 1989. Today, the 450-acre parcel anchors the biggest real estate construction project in San Francisco since the 1906 earthquake. More than 10,000 housing units, hundreds of acres of parks and millions of square feet of commercial space are proposed...The Navy has spent more than $1.3B to remove toxic and radioactive material from the site. Cleanup is poised to stretch through the 2020s, thanks in part to a contractor #fraud scandal: Two supervisors at an environmental engineering firm hired by the Navy to clean up the shipyard received prison sentences after pleading guilty in federal court to faking soil samples. Retesting and several lawsuits are ongoing." https://lnkd.in/euju-GnF

𝙉𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙖𝙯𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙐𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙞𝙥𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙣’𝙨 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙡 Houston, recognized as the energy capital of the world, faces unique challenges with its dense network of 250 underwater pipelines along the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel. This complex system supports one of the busiest ports in the United States, handling more ship movements annually than LA and New York combined. Despite stringent safety measures, including signage and educational initiatives by Marine Safe Texas 811, incidents occur, averaging one fatality per year due to unintended contact between marine vessels and pipelines. The Houston Pilots play a crucial role in mitigating risks. They provide skilled pilots with navigation computers that detail pipeline locations and ensure safe passage for ships. Their expertise is particularly vital given the minimal clearance between the ship's bottom and the channel bed, often only a few feet. This tight navigation space underscores the importance of precision and caution in maintaining marine and pipeline safety. #HoustonShipChannel #MaritimeSafety #UnderwaterPipelines #PetrochemicalIndustry https://lnkd.in/ghGDfNRB

Although Range Safety does its best to offer rules to help protect most of us on the ground that work close to these rocket launch facilities, they still cannot protect us from the hazardous environments that follow a hydrazine fueled explosion and the winds that may carry these toxic chemicals a few thousand feet away. The best advice, always be vigilant and know why these lessons learned driven requirements were included in EWR127-1 or the RCC documents it may have spawned. https://lnkd.in/eZqCX64P

The US Coast Guard is conducting a two-week hearing in Charleston County, South Carolina, to investigate the implosion of the Titan submersible, which killed all five people on board in June 2023. The hearing aims to uncover the facts surrounding the incident and develop recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Former employees of OceanGate, the company that owned the Titan, are scheduled to testify, including the former engineering director, finance director, and a former contractor. The Titan imploded while en route to the Titanic wreckage site, sparking a global debate about private undersea exploration. The company suspended operations after the incident, which killed OceanGate co-founder Stockton Rush, veteran Titanic explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and three others. The Coast Guard has subpoenaed witnesses who were not government employees, and numerous officials, scientists, and industry experts are expected to testify. Some key OceanGate representatives, including Rush's widow Wendy Rush, are not scheduled to testify. The Coast Guard has not commented on the reasons for not calling specific individuals to the hearing. OceanGate has stated that it is fully cooperating with the Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board investigations and will be represented by an attorney during the hearing. The Titan's unconventional design and lack of independent checks had raised scrutiny in the undersea exploration community. The hearing will delve into all aspects of the loss of the Titan, including mechanical considerations, compliance with regulations, and crewmember qualifications. The investigation's time frame was initially a year, but it has taken longer. The Coast Guard hopes that the hearing will help shed light on the cause of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future. . . . #CoastGuardInvestigation #TitanSubmersible #OceanGate #UnderseaExploration #MarineCasualty #SafetyRegulations #tribunetrends

A tool for #Rescue Planning and 🚢 #Operations Timing in #Ice. How far you can go from your position in 1 hour? Estimate and display reachability in different directions with respect of ice conditions on the way. 🕒 X-hours reachable region on an ice/water #satellite image is usually asymmetric: in fixed time, you’ll get farther by using leads and openings, and closer – by breaking through ice fields. Time reachability regions are not only for #rescue planning, but also for #service and 🛳 #expeditionary operations. Imagine you need a fast estimation of time required to visit places of interest. ✔ To calculate reachability regions in software Ice Digital 1.2, only a few seconds are enough. Calculation time depends on the satellite image size. ✔ The reachability estimation is based on the time-optimal routing approach. It means: to get to the estimated frontier by the desired time you should take the optimized #route, which usually not coincides with the direct way. ✔ Time accessibility limits can be customized in the settings dialog. ✔ In case only a part of the satellite image is set as navigable, the reachability regions are computed only within this part. 💡 In the workspace exported from Ice Digital 1.2, the reachability regions built for the 🛰 Sentinel-3 image of the Gulf of #Bothnia ice conditions on April 12, 2024, are displayed. Places reachable in less than 2 hours, in 2-4 hours, or in more than 4 hours, are colored by green, yellow, and red respectively. #maritime #computerscience #safety #innovation

An international aerospace company seeking to collaborate with national defense agencies on surveillance and defense initiatives is considering Colorado Springs for a U.S. base. The unidentified company, assigned the code name Project Diamond, is described as "a developer of a space surveillance system designed to offer predictive and robust space-based situational awareness services." The system utilizes "a constellation of cost-efficient nanosatellites in LEO (Low Earth Orbit)." If the company chooses Colorado Springs, it's expected to bring 61 new jobs at an average annual wage of $82,645, which is 130% of the average annual wage in El Paso County. The jobs would include software engineers, systems engineers, business developers and HR and finance roles. The company is also considering North Carolina, Texas and California for its U.S. base.
