𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐤: 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 - 𝐒𝐃𝐆𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞? As we dig into the reasons why the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are losing track, the first question we must ask ourselves is: How serious are we? On the surface, it seems like we’re making strides. We talk about the SDGs, write articles, launch initiatives, and share inspiring stories on social media. But is this enough? Are we truly making a difference, or are we simply preaching to the choir while ignoring the real world? Let’s be honest: much of what we do happens within our own bubbles. We create content, host conferences, and celebrate small victories. But how much of this actually translates into meaningful change on the ground? Take, for instance, the act of feeding a group of people and then broadcasting it online. It might garner likes and shares, but if we compare this impact against the staggering reality that over 1 billion people are still hungry, the effect is negligible—0.0001% at best. The harsh truth is that we’ve been too focused on appearances. We’ve equated visibility with progress, and in doing so, we’ve allowed ourselves to believe that we are moving forward when, in reality, we might just be treading water. The first mistake we've made is letting prestige and public relations take precedence over transparency and honesty. We've been too afraid to admit that, despite our efforts, we are not where we need to be. It's time to shed the illusion of progress and confront the reality. We must be willing to acknowledge our shortcomings, to be transparent about the challenges we face, and to be unashamed in admitting where we have fallen short. This is the only way we can begin to truly move forward and avoid wasting more precious time. In the next part, we’ll explore the second cause behind the SDGs’ failure: #outreach. How effectively are we spreading the #message? Are we engaging the right stakeholders and communities?
