An incredible report about the state of Nashville’s nightlife - the findings and recommendations apply to London and all cities where nightlife is important. Key takeaways: Music venues increasingly face a math problem: costs are high and rising further, and it can be extremely difficult to make a profit. In addition to taking fewer chances on less-established artists or genres, some venues aim to reduce risk by working with corporate partners, or locating further out. Affordable rents and urban mobility are major issues, for people and venues. Musicians and nightlife workers are concerned that the cost of living will price them out of the city. Meanwhile, as corporate venue owners increase their presence, there is fear that independent venues will soon have no place in an increasingly costly city. Increased development in nightlife areas sets the scene for new conflicts between venues and neighbors. As residential development increases, venues and residences are more likely to exist close together, fueling new pressures on existing venues and creating challenges for new venues to find suitable space. Recommendations: Across the board, these actions rely upon improving public governance structures, fostering a “music coalition” that activates public, private and civic actors, and taking proactive steps to ensure venues’ health. Aligned with the findings above, these actions aim to support music spaces, improve policies and urban processes, and foster music communities. Support live music through civic leadership and a “whole of government” approach. A robust, repositioned Office of Nightlife should coordinate Metro government offices with one another and with a “music coalition” of dedicated civic leaders. Bolster government capacity, strategy, and data practices to more effectively support independent venues. Use policy, regulatory and development tools to support venues: launch an independent music venue land trust and legacy business program, and use land-use regulations to create more space for music venues. Reduce challenges and costs of starting and operating new venues through education for the next generation of independent venue operators, space “matchmaking” initiatives between would-be operators and real estate partners, financial support for venues, and simplified permitting processes. Make urban mobility work for live music venues, workers and patrons: improve urban mobility options, and try pilot projects and experiments to benefit venues. Extend music-related investments to more genres and more neighborhoods through events, marketing, funding and policy investment in independent venue-rich areas outside Downtown. Prioritize independent operators in Metro spaces and events.
I spent the last 18 months working in Nashville leading a big study of independent music venues. Today it's finally out. Long story short - independent and small venues are critical to Nashville's culture and economy, and there are lots of ways the City, civic institutions and communities can start protecting them and growing new venues. Shoutout to my project team PennPraxis VibeLab Culture Shift Team, Inc.

Had a fantastic morning yesterday at Harlaxton Manor at the Decarbonisation and sustainability workshop. My big takeaway from the day was no matter the size of your business just take action 'messy action' is better then no action, we may not always get it right first time but we can learn and try again. Now is the time to take action if you have not started already. Thank you Paul Green, South Kesteven District Council SKDC and the Chamber for putting on such an informative event #skdcnetzero #harlaxtonmanor #climetaction #southKesteven #lincolnshire #lincolnshirechamberofcommerce Music by Nver Avetyan from Pixabay

My experience with the folks behind #alphaonthedelta fits the plug below... the bottom line is that the election of Trump creates an especially complicated financial landscape where the trend is no longer obvious and thus wisdom is in high demand.

After Parties and Late Nights are a great event format that can really elevate a venue and connect with different audiences. Howie Schnee shares a ton of insights in this 15-minute interview all about After Parties. Some takeaways: 🥳 Target audiences that like to stay out late (probably not great for family events, but a great new use for a traditionally family-focused spaced. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium does a great job of this with their Late Nights at the Zoo). 🥳 Make it unique. Events are competitive. You can give yourself an edge by doing something unique. Go deeper for the fans or put a twist on something traditional. 🥳 Create partnerships. If booking talent isn't your strong suite, offer favorable terms to a local, well-connected promoter. 🥳 Support a cause the artist cares about. If you're piggy-backing off a big name performing nearby, consider supporting a cause they care about to improve relations with them and their fans. Howie dives into the details in the video below. Give Howie Schnee a follow too. He's often sharing great insights from his decades as a promoter.
The concept of the After Party is a topic that comes up a lot with venues and up-and-coming promoters. Howie Schnee, Co-Founder and President of CEG Presents [CEG Inc.], has been hosting wildly popular Phish After Parties in NYC since the 90's. He's also promoted many other After Parties in NYC, New Orleans during Jazz Fest, and elsewhere. Howie generously shares his insights and experience about what makes a great after party that will sell out and be... a great party. #venue #promoter #musicindustry #concerts #events
