Five days until kick off for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. This will be my 12th consecutive Festival and each year there are more and more ‘Top Tips’ from the Jurors, team, and repeat festival attendees on how to “do Cannes”. Of course it would be remiss of me to offer anything other than the most #Effective tips - so here are my Top Tips on how to have an Effective #CannesLions. 1. Plan your diary - arrange breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffees, afternoon cocktails, post dinner drinks, early morning swims, parties, Festival sessions (and of course don’t forget to diarise 15.15-15.45 Thursday 20 June https://lnkd.in/eBthy4yb) - its not everyday you will get to see me taking on the role of an Inglorious B***ard CEO (seriously), whilst we unpack brand new findings from a comprehensive study into levels of alignment across the CEO/CFO/CMO trifecta… 2. Get ready for your diary to not go at all to plan. 3. Carry portable phone charges - see point above - everybody's day becomes fluid (some fluidity more down to rose consumption than others) - get ready to reschedule, rebook and reset. 4. Plan at least two days post #CannesLions to do your follow up, not just resetting your liver, but your reaching out to those new and old contacts you bumped into on the Croisette and nailing those potential new business opportunities. 5. Flat comfortable shoes are a must - its been said before, but that doesn’t make it any less effective. The Croissette is just under 1.5miles long, and whilst you won’t need to head to the end of it, and back, every time.. you will be making multiple trips up and down throughout the day. Day in day out. Comfortable shoes, trust me… 6. And as a corollary to the above, a bike is even bigger win…. 7. Check out the work in the basement - when else do you get time to see the BEST creativity from all over the world in the one place. Take it - and question it, what worked, how do you think it worked, review and learn. 8. Check out the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity #CreativeEffectiveness Awards show - I’m honoured to be a Cannes Lions Effectiveness master, and to have helped pull the criteria together for its launch back in 2011. Fast forward to 2024 and its an effective way of seeing at a glance commercial creativity at work. 9. Once again, Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity was a great event filled with many great client meetings & dinners, impromptu run-ins, and frank discussions. If you get the chance to go, I highly recommend it. It truly remains our industry's best event. But despite all the chatter you'll hear this week, Cannes is NOT the place where the future is being created. The future isn't crafted at Villas, on Beach Lounges, or inside expensive pop-up tents. The future is being developed on whiteboards and napkins, in meetings between customer & tech teams to discuss ways to solve pain points, and in the minds of the many creative folks of our industry who REFUSE to accept the status quo. It's being created in the garages of talented entrepreneurs playing around with LLMs, privacy-enhancing tech, and novel ways to approach the intersection of entertainment, data, and distribution. So, while I'll certainly miss the croissants, weather and laid back life on the Riviera, I'm more excited to put my nose to the grindstone with our incredible employees, partners and customers to create the future of connected TV platforms. Did you know this year's Spring Festival holiday was extended by a day? Running from February 10th to February 17th, this eight-day break saw more people packing their bags for trips, making more holiday purchases, and spending quality time with their families doing leisure activities. A truly remarkable holiday season! During the holiday season, China's national box office surged to a historic high of 8.02 billion yuan (approximately 1.13 billion US dollars), as reported by the China Film Administration. Simultaneously, the count of moviegoers also reached a new peak at 163 million. These statistics mark an 18.47 percent rise in box office revenue and a 26.36 percent increase in audience attendance compared to the Spring Festival holiday of the previous year. In 2023, South Korea's high-end entertainment sector recorded ₩624 billion ($469 million) in sales through corporate credit cards, with more than half attributed to hostess clubs. This marks a significant increase of ₩61 billion from the previous year, comprising 0.4% of total corporate credit card spending. According to the data from National Tax Service, the manufacturing sector had the highest entertainment expenses, followed by services and wholesale. These figures underscore the deep-rooted cultural significance of entertainment and socializing in Korea, especially for business purposes. The Enforcement Degree Act on the Regulation of Amusement Business Affecting Public Morals governs upscale hostess bars and restaurants, which legally offer entertainment primarily through female staff, provided their services do not extend into prostitution. A closer look at the spending reveals that ₩341 billion was spent at "room salons," private hostess bars where patrons enjoy a more intimate and exclusive atmosphere. Meanwhile, ₩131 billion went to "dalanjujeom," popular venues where guests engage in karaoke while enjoying drinks. Traditional hostess bars, known as "yojeong," along with dinner theaters and nightclubs, saw sales of ₩80 billion, ₩54 billion, and ₩18 billion, respectively. Corporate credit card use in entertainment has seen a decline from over ₩1 trillion in the early 2010s to ₩861 billion by 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted this sector, reducing sales to just ₩212 billion in 2021 due to social distancing restrictions. However, the industry has rebounded, tripling its revenue in just three years, highlighting the importance of Korea's social culture. Additionally, the average entertainment expense per corporation, which had decreased from ₩14.02 million in 2020 to ₩12.55 million in 2021 due to the pandemic, rose to ₩12.93 million in 2022 and increased again to ₩14.86 million last year. This trend reflects the gradual recovery and growing emphasis on corporate entertainment activities, a cornerstone of business culture in Korea.
