Reflecting back to when I first started my MCC journey with Dr. Paras Daithankar a few months ago, I was apprehensive and unsure. I asked myself, "Am I ready to take this leap? Lately, I’ve realized that the most significant breakthroughs in life don’t come from knowing exactly how things will turn out, but from believing in something even when uncertainty surrounds us. Whether it's navigating personal challenges, starting a new project, or making a career leap, belief is the fuel that keeps us moving forward. When I think about moments that changed the world—like the Wright brothers achieving flight, Nelson Mandela standing resilient through years of oppression, or Marie Curie pushing through the unknown in her scientific research—they all had one thing in common: belief in the face of uncertainty. None of them knew exactly how things would turn out, but they had the conviction to move forward despite the unknown. So, I’ve come to see that belief in uncertain times is the foundation of greatness. It’s not about having a perfect plan or all the answers upfront. It’s about trusting that the path will reveal itself as long as you keep pushing forward. In fact, it’s often in those uncertain moments that the most incredible transformations happen. Do embarassing shit. That’s my personal theme for this year of transformation at the Indian School of Business. All of us are extremely comfortable with the things we are good at. But it’s when you put yourself in situations that make you jittery that you give a new meaning to comfort. Throughout my life, I have been sticking to my strengths. Strengths are great but they limit you as a person. On the contrary, weaknesses suck. It’s not a great feeling to be miserable at something. But to have the courage to go out there and fight your weaknesses… that’s when you expand your horizons and find out what you’re really made of! Last night, I overcame one of my biggest fears - giving a solo performance on the stage (a first in my life) in front of my entire cohort. I was extremely anxious because I am really not a performer. But I fought all of it and went for it anyway. It was relieving. I did something incredibly courageous last night and I am so proud of myself for it. I want to carry this belief with me throughout my MBA journey and let everyone know that failing is NOT a problem. Make mistakes. Be embarrassing. In the words of Robert F. Some people do not need to try to be inspirational. They just are... It was beyond inspirational to meet #SrikanthBolla, the man with vision beyond sight! Hearing him speak about his life journey, I realized that we often take our blessings and gifts for granted, making excuses for every little challenge that comes our way. The way Srikanth talked about his challenges, making everything seem so easy and seamless...it made me reflect on how volatile our spirits are. We tend to falter at the slightest of inconveniences. There is so much to work on the self! Born to poor, illiterate parents who were advised to abandon him, Srikanth's parents chose instead to support him unconditionally. When Srikanth expressed his desire to study science after 10th grade, he faced opposition but fought for his right, eventually being permitted to pursue his passion. He excelled in his 12th board exams, topping his class with a remarkable 98%. Despite being denied admission to IIT-JEE coaching, Srikanth’s perseverance paid off as he secured a seat at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study Management Science, becoming the first international blind student there. Although he was offered a job in America, Srikanth chose to return to India to make a difference. In 2012, he founded Bollant Industries, which manufactures areca-based products and employs several specially-abled individuals. However clichéd it may sound, meeting Srikanth Bolla reminded me of the power of resilience and the profound impact a single person can make. It is not just about overcoming a disability but more about looking at possibilities. As Srikanth says, "Don’t see what is not there...see what is possible." I want to thank the Harvard Business School Club of India for inviting me to host a webinar on the topic of Difficult Conversations in Family Enterprises. We had a great turnout and I was thrilled with the enthusiastic participation from HBS alums. Having difficult conversations is not an easy subject, but they did not shy away from my cold calls and sharing their personal challenges. I especially liked the father and daughter who both tuned in not knowing the other would be present. For family businesses to survive and thrive, both the family dynamics and the business relationships need to be fostered, and that cannot happen without clarity and communication. Remember the 5 rules for a successful conversation: 1️⃣ Don't let problems fester. If there's an issue, it's better to address it in a timely manner. 2️⃣ Ask for a meeting ahead of time with a clear agenda so the other person has time to think and prepare. Don't surprise someone with a difficult conversation. 3️⃣ Meet in person and pick a neutral meeting place. 4️⃣ Keep your goal in mind and approach the conversation with a desired outcome. 5️⃣ Leave the conversation with a clear plan of next steps.
