We often talk about Grandmasters and the top FIDE players. FIDE has granted more than 2000 Grandmaster titles. Then how do we differentiate the likes of Magnus, Hikaru, Gukesh, Pragg etc? Actually another possible question is, do we even need to? I do not know to be honest. The top players in any field are supposed to be respected and the ones who are best among the best command the respect and are revered. So people thought of coining a new term called the Super Grandmasters. This unofficial title does not really have a static rating requirements and it has kind of shifted from 2600 to 2700s in the recent years for minimum rating requirement (unofficially of course). As of today, while writing this post there are 34 players with the rating of 2700 and above. Do you think FIDE should now introduce it?
