The biggest mistake I made in my career: 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝. Here’s how it played out. For years, I poured everything into my job. 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬. 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬. 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐞𝐬. I thought being indispensable would get me noticed. But then reality hit. => I felt 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭. => I was stuck in the same role for years, 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝. => 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐲 while I doubted my own worth. And then came the breaking point. During a team meeting, 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 shared weeks earlier. 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝: My hard work wasn’t the problem. My visibility, confidence, and strategy were. Here’s what I did next: * 𝐈 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 on what I truly wanted. * 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 for recognition and started asking for it. * 𝐈 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 of supporters who helped me grow. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬? => A promotion within a year. => Confidence to say no to what didn’t align. => 𝐀 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞. Here’s the question I wish I’d asked myself sooner: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 I 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 I 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞?

You were recently promoted because you've ✅ Got a killer work ethic ✅ Fought tooth and nail to get here ✅ Been ready for this new opportunity You're a badass at what you do, but you don't feel like one. The reality is that you're scared sh*tless that you're gonna... 😫 not be liked 😫 make a mistake 😫 not be liked for making a mistake Worse yet, you stumble over your words whenever trying to talk to supervisors and executives. Where's the confidence you thought would be waiting on you when you earned the new job title? Great question. Fortunately, confidence doesn't work that way. It's never generated from any title, any accomplishment, or any advancement of any kind. Those events can only affirm what is already within you. Which means two things: 1. If you lack confidence, a promotion is only going to amplify your fear and self-doubt 2. If you have been developing self-confidence, a promotion is only going to affirm that you can do this. Because the Universe responds to the energy you're putting out. So, to all you scared sh*tless - Congratulations! You're a badass who's just been handed a gift. Because fear is the Universe's RSVP to you to grow out of the mindsets holding you back. This is the amazing experience I get to see my clients do over and over and over.The greatest achievements in human history happened because brave people felt afraid and acted anyway. Here's how to tell if you stayed at your company too long. When you start your new job, you'll hear things like: - You're the best! - How is your family? - It's great working with you! - We're thrilled you joined our team! - Let's collaborate to solve this problem. - We couldn't solve this issue without you. - The idea you presented was outstanding! - Let's discuss your career goals each month. This is the environment you experience when you are an appreciated member of a healthy team and company. Initially, it might feel as though you're living a dream. It's not a dream. You're simply receiving well-deserved and long-overdue recognition.

When I'm working with clients, I'm always grateful when they trust me enough to tell me how they really feel about things. In many cases, folks feel like they're the only one who feels that way or that no one else is experiencing what they are. But in my position, I get to see themes across all sorts of industries, levels, and roles. A big one recently: People feeling embarrassed about where they're at in their career. So many folks feel some version of this, but don't use the word "embarrassed" tell their friends, family or closest networks for fear of "looking like they don't know what they're doing." Story time! 😄 First job - I was so damn excited about taking up this opportunity! It felt like I could reach the sky. But as the first day neared, anxiety crept in, jitters taking hold, fear replaced excitement & doubts growing were bold. I wish somebody had told me how out of place you feel when it’s your 1st day at your first ever job. I was so anxious and had so many jitters right after entering the office. However, I can vouch that nothing teaches you more than your first job. Here are some lessons I learnt- 1. Befriend everybody, trust nobody- because competition. 2. Do not participate in the rat race. Instead enjoy learning new things from experienced people who you admire and respect. 3. Ask for help when needed. Though make sure that you have put an effort to figure things out before you ask. 4. Take initiative, be responsible and experiment with things. 5. Do not commit to unrealistic deadlines. 6. Under commit and over deliver. It makes you look like you understand timelines and then you also have some breathing space if something goes wrong. 7. Smart work over hard work. Always. 8. It is time that you shed your naivety. Always act professional and keep your eyes and ears open. 9. Be respectful but don't be a pushover. Have strict boundaries. 10. Remember that work is just one part of your life. Your friends, family, relationships, hobbies are equally important. It is easy to forget this.

  Excited to share that I’ve recently started a new role as Global Early Careers Lead at Hiscox! A big thank you to Summer Curtis and Mike Dimitriadis for this amazing opportunity.    The job market has been incredibly challenging, and I’ve faced my fair share of setbacks. For those of you still navigating this tough journey, I want to share a few strategies that helped me stay focused and positive:    1. Build your network: Finding your tribe is crucial. Over the past four months, I’ve reached out to countless people inside and outside my network for virtual coffee chats. These conversations provided invaluable insights and support.  2. Set small, achievable goals: Breaking things into manageable steps makes a huge difference. Having an accountability buddy kept me on track, and checking off those to-dos was incredibly satisfying.  3. Embrace the tough days: It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Acknowledge those emotions—it’s part of the process. Looking for a job is a brave undertaking.  4. Upskill yourself: Take advantage of free resources like podcasts and YouTube videos to grow your skills and stay sharp.    Special shoutout to my career coach Rachel, as well as Jennifer, Ivy, and Zephaniah—your support has been invaluable. It’s April the 5th, 2025 and you still: Are stuck in your career  Lack of clarity and direction  Your confidence has taken a hit  Are surrounded by uncertainty and doubt You shouldn’t have to stay in place for longer.
