As fire safety is a key challenge for the industry, we believe it's important to engage with key stakeholders to explore how we can implement best practices for a safer and more efficient sector. With this in mind, we recently spoke with Jamie Davis, Co-CEO at PartB Fire Engineering, to discuss what best practice means for Jamie and his team 💡 Jamie's final thoughts on best practice were "... Not always accepting everything you see at face value which can be achieved by asking challenging questions and aiming to improve fire safety education and processes within the industry..." One for fire engineers or fire safety engineers everywhere - say you are out and about and meet someone new (at a party or the gym or the pub etc) and they ask you "So what do you do for a living?" - how do you answer this in a concise way? I usually say something like "I'm a fire engineer which means I help architects make buildings safer - from a fire safety point of view. Recently I've been dealing with lots of the combustible cladding issues" There has to be a better explanation of what we do - anyone got one? #fireengineer #firesafetyengineer #engineering

HGI’s “Think Upstream” April 2024 “Due Diligence and Fire Protection Engineering” Are you in the market for a property, new or existing building or tenant space? “Think Upstream” by having a Fire Protection Engineer involved in your due diligence. Numerous items can be discovered that can be costly if not uncovered during your due diligence period. Here are just some of the issues a Fire Protection Engineer can address to protect you and your business: 1. Does that new property have access to an adequate water supply for your facility, or commodity and/or storage arrangement? Will a fire pump be necessary? Is a fire water storage tank necessary? 2. Does the existing fire sprinkler system have the capability to protect your company’s commodity and storage arrangement without modification? 3. Is the firefighter radio signal adequate in the building? Or will an Emergency Radio Communication Enhancement System (“ERCES”) be required by the local fire authorities? 4. Is the existing fire alarm system, sprinkler systems, fire pump, in good/working condition? And has the required inspection, testing, and maintenance been performed? 5. Will moving into an existing facility with your use/process constitute a change in occupancy? 6. Is the means of egress appropriate for your company’s staffing/process/configuration? 7. What is the existing construction type? Will it accommodate your business? 8. Will existing fire resistance ratings need modification? 9. Are building’s fire separation distances to lot lines or other structures appropriate for the new use of the structure? 10. What is the time/level of effort to get your new space built and receive a certificate of occupancy? A qualified fire protection engineer, like Harrington Group, Inc., can help you answer these and many more questions as your search for that next property unfolds. Good article from the #AmericanNationalStandardsInstitute on standardised inspections of passive fire protection. #PassiveFireSolutions have and continue to use Standardised inspection measures like #ASTME2174-20: On-Site Inspection of Installed Firestops, as well and bespoke means to pick up on all too common defects still found in new and remedial construction projects along with existing building with built in deficiencies.

Commercial buildings require robust fire protection systems to ensure the safety of occupants and assets. Below we explore the key components that make up effective fire protection systems. → Detection and Alarm Systems: Early detection of fire via smoke and heat detectors, coupled with effective alarm systems, can save lives by ensuring timely evacuation. → Sprinkler Systems: Automatic sprinkler systems can significantly reduce fire damage and aid in controlling fires until emergency services arrive. → Emergency Lighting and Signage: Properly installed emergency lighting and clear signage are crucial for safe evacuation during power outages or smoke-filled conditions. The Golden Thread in Fire Engineering: A Lifesaving Standard In the world of fire engineering, safety isn’t just a goal, it’s a responsibility. One critical concept that’s revolutionising how we approach building safety is the Golden Thread. The Golden Thread ensures that all fire safety information, from design to construction and ongoing maintenance, is accurate, up-to-date, and readily accessible. This seamless flow of information is crucial in preventing fires and minimizing risks during emergencies. Here’s why the Golden Thread matters: 1️. Accountability & Transparency: It holds every stakeholder, from architects to contractors and building managers, responsible for ensuring fire safety standards are maintained. 2️. Collaboration Across the Lifecycle: It ensures that fire safety is not just a consideration during the design and build stages, but is continuously monitored throughout a building’s lifecycle. 3️. Prevention and Response: In the event of a fire, having detailed, accurate records allows emergency services to respond faster and more effectively, potentially saving lives. 4️. Legal & Regulatory Compliance: Post-Grenfell, regulations demand greater accountability, and the Golden Thread is a key to meeting these standards. As Fire Engineers, adopting this approach isn't just about compliance, it's about ensuring that people and property are protected. If you need advice about how you can implement the Golden Thread into your latest projects, get in touch with us now. #FireEngineering #GoldenThread #TeamAura Mo Naghizadeh, CFPS, Deniz Ozdamar, Holly Evans

Fire safety and criticisms of the DHP concept Several articles have been published since 2015 on a concept concerning the fire resistance of structural elements of buildings called “DHP” for “duration of the heating phase”. FIre and Maerials published, at the beginning of April 2024, a commentary article that I wrote on criticisms concerning this concept ( https://lnkd.in/dtSxRSsE) . It was followed by the response of T. Gernay who developed this concept (https://lnkd.in/dnhyzrbG). Since FaM is not prepared to publish any more communication on this subject, here is attached my comment on this response. This DHP is defined as the the shortest heating duration of a structural element which would lead to its collapse during the cooling phase of a "natural" fire. The need for this concept, explained by its author, is due to the fire resistance requirements, which would not include the cooling phase of "real" fires. According to the concept of equal area of severity developed by Ingberg in the 1920s, this is not true, as the accompanying commentaries explain. The main conclusion of this additional document is that this DHP concept does not bring any added value to the current approach based on the ISO 834 fire. Only a a fire safety engineering assessment (see ISO 23932-1) is able to provide a sufficiently accurate analysis of the risk of cllapse of a building in the event of a fire.
