Engineering Microbiome for Therapeutics, Wellness and Diagnostics. Make in India for the World.

Story of a headless chicken, i.e. Indian academia. Credential mill without any focus on disruptive innovation :( Saw this viral post from a PhD student undergoing research at a CSIR laboratory. Most of my conversations with Indian PhD candidates, Postdocs, and even permanent faculty have been about bean counting publications, awards, or ranks (assistant vs full professor). IMO, this is exactly why Indian academia has no significant impact on the global innovation space. The prevalent culture is about publishing papers and not solving impactful problems or coming up with disruptive innovation. We are setting a terrible example for our bright young students and disabling them for life. Young friends: If your potential mentor cannot discuss big ideas with a clear vision for disruption, then stay away from that lab. No one cares about your PhD degree, 100+ publications, and even the full professor or dean designation. Real world is extremely outcome oriented. Do not let the degree certificate or fake celebratory balle balle let you fool into destroying your prime learning/earning years. PS: The rot starts much earlier. After 12th standard the kids must aspire to make money, learn valuable skills, build tangible products, and/or embark on an intellectual journey. Focus must not be on attending a prestigious college. No one cares about your IIT/Princeton diploma. You will be solely judged on the VALUE you CREATE.

I disagree with the opinion "Disruptive Innovation". The opinion shouldn't be stated unidirectionally without understanding the complex and competitive environment of Indian academic. Getting JRF is very tough & competitive (only 1% to 2%) do get. A student understand that getting JRF means ur Getting some stipend to do study, but ur Supervisor/Investigator doesn't have vision nor work on the fundamentals, then a what student do. Getting 1 good publication in PhD means a PhD graduate cannot get even Guest Faculty in a college for a consolidated pay, leave about other desire. Therefore VALUE & CREATE doesn't create a student for himself/herself, but it's environment that force to take decision for survival. Only those who are lucky in getting supportive ecosystem, they try to develop VALUE & CREATE attitude.

Everybody gets sarkari naukri. Profs don't raise grant money mostly to get JRFs, PhD students. Money/Salary is given independent of work. Good work, same salary. Bad work, same salary. Like any government job, it isn't outcome based. This social experiment is great example of misalignment of Incentives. They do great work once they land in US, if they do. Very few do. US grants are all outcome based. No free lunch. Outcome in US is obvious too. US loves Indian postdocs!

Unfortunately, it is not just in academia but almost everywhere. Sports is probably one of the very few sectors where things are starting to change. Let's keep doing and thereby keep inspiring youngsters- things will change for good!

True.. I hope people don't fall for this vicious cycle. Even I have been a victim of it.. Now that I have figured out, adding meaning to society is more important. I have taken a step back. Hope to find my ikigai and leave the rat race soon.
