🏆 Conclusion of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU! 🏆 Yesterday marked the end of the #BelgianPresidency, characterised by a strong commitment to social policies that resonate with values I have come to appreciate during my 11 years in this remarkable country. The conclusion of this six-month term also marks the end of a more socially focused mandate for the European Commission, particular when compared with its predecessors. We look forward to even stronger commitments in the future. 🚨 Big News for EU Health Policy: Full Health Committee on the Horizon! The EPP, Renew, and S&D groups in the European Parliament have reached an agreement to transform the Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT) into a full committee with legislative powers! This major move, part of the deal to support Commissioners-Designate Jessika Roswall and Hadja Lahbib, shifts health decision-making in the EU. This shift will separate health responsibilities from environmental issues, allowing the new SANT Committee to take the lead on crucial health areas, from pharmaceuticals and medical devices to mental health and health crisis response. Meanwhile, the ENVI Committee will focus on climate and environmental policies. Official confirmation is expected in December, with the new committee launching in January 2025. This restructuring has the potential to shape the EU’s future health response. The pursuit of a "pandemic treaty" to prevent future global health crises has been fraught with challenges, highlighting the complexities of international cooperation in the face of public health emergencies. Despite the devastation caused by COVID-19, the finalization of a comprehensive plan remains elusive, with the latest round of talks struggling to reach consensus. While the treaty aims to outline guidelines for pandemic response and resource-sharing, concerns persist over enforcement mechanisms and the accountability of member countries. As the world grapples with the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the urgency of effective global health governance has never been clearer. 🌍🤝 #PandemicTreaty #GlobalHealth #COVID19 #InternationalCooperation 📜🔍 https://lnkd.in/eXChWwkM

There’s no way around it: health is political. Health has always been political. We need political commitment to drive progress. What does this mean in practice for the future of health diplomacy? What we see right now is an extraordinary degree of polarization, a rise in dissent, disagreements, and much less clear-cut alliances. At the World Health Organization, we know what multilateralism can do for health. During our latest World Health Assembly, despite big differences, Member States were able to find common ground. The International Health Regulations deliberations concluded with an agreement. While the Intergovernmental Body negotiations have not yet delivered a pandemic agreement, countries expressed the need for more time and agreed on the way forward, still believing in a solution. Multilateralism requires willingness to negotiate, and listening to peers from the south, the north, small, medium and big — all with different political views. When they decide to find common ground, that’s where meaningful results are achieved. These are some of the messages I shared with colleagues at the #H20Summit. Great to hear about the parliamentary debate on global health. There needs to be a priority on bridging #healthequity so innovations in new medicines reach patients globally, including women, children and other vulnerable populations usually left last in line for access. Preparing for the future threats in healthcare such as pandemics and drug resistant infections is also top priority for society. Read more on how the #pharma industry can work with global health strategies of governments to enable better access in our work. Delighted to have been present today at the first parliamentary debate on the Dutch Global Health Strategy (2023-2030). MPs from 7 parties engaged in a lively exchange with our Minister of Medical Care and with the Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. There was broad support for the strategy and for international cooperation as a means to strengthening health systems and access to good quality health care both in The Netherlands and abroad. The importance of a cross-sectoral approach, involving young people, promoting innovation and investing in prevention were underlined. Pandemic preparedness, equitable access to medicines, the health of women and girls and the negative impact of climate change on our health were key points raised. We look forward to taking forward the implementation of the strategy and reporting back to the parliament later this year on progress. 🌎✨#vws #globalhealthstrategy #who #pandemicpreparedness #internationalcooperation #globalhealthhubNL Nikki Kenters Pia Dijkstra Roland Driece Lars Tummers Paul Bekkers Pascalle Grotenhuis Johanneke de Hoogh Ernst Kuipers

#UnitedNationsPushPandemicTreaty CitizenGO: WHO and its allies are more determined than ever to fast-track this treaty by the end of the year. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) has now laid out an aggressive timeline to ram the WHO Pandemic Treaty through. With upcoming negotiation sessions scheduled for September and November, their goal is to have everything ready for a special session of the World Health Assembly by 15 November, 2024, to adopt this draconian agreement. They’ve strategically left October open for various WHO regional conferences but plan inter-sessional meetings with experts to ensure no time is wasted. We knew they were going to maneuver to impose the approval of the pandemic treaty... but didn't imagine they would do it so soon. We are now fighting on two fronts to maximize impact. We are not only campaigning fiercely against the Pandemic Treaty… … but also aggressively challenging every member state to withdraw from the parallel agreement - the International Health Regulations (IHR) - which was pushed through at the World Health Assembly in May. Ask your government to withdraw from the IHR as soon as possible. It's a trap. You have no idea how they operate. The fight for our freedoms against globalist overreach is intensifying. Remember, both these agreements severely put your fundamental freedoms at risk: Future pandemics declared by the WHO. Expanded emergency powers for the WHO. Isolation and quarantine imposed by unelected authorities. Forced medical exams and vaccinations for travel. High surveillance and controlled information. The right to work, travel, or make medical decisions dictated by the WHO. The sheer lack of transparency in these negotiations has been alarming. Stakeholders have even slammed the process, calling it completely lacking in transparency, as the new rules excluded many from attending closed sessions. This lack of transparency has destroyed trust and exposed their true intentions behind the treaty. The desperate rush to pass this treaty shows a blatant disregard for public accountability and participation. But the good news is, you and I are the unstoppable force we need! Our team are the only ones exposing the WHO’s lack of transparency and their aggressive power grab. We are the only ones leading the fight on both fronts - opposing the WHO Pandemic Treaty while at the same time, pushing countries to withdraw from the IHR at local level. This is why your support is crucial. Our presence in Geneva continues to be a testament to our unwavering commitment to defend our freedoms against the WHO’s totalitarian power grab.

Well said. Health and Politics cannot be separated. More meaningful collaboration & action is critical to bring progress in healthcare and reduce health inequalities. We see firsthand how political decisions shape the health and well-being of our communities.

How can the EU maximise its global health impact? The policy brief from the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies on 'European support for improving global health systems and policies' explains why this matters now more than ever. The European Union has a huge impact—and even greater potential—on global health. As one of the world's largest markets, leading aid donors, healthcare innovators, and trading powers, the EU influences global health and health policy both directly and indirectly. Key Messages from the EU Global Health Strategy ✨ 1️⃣ Coherent Approach: There’s a growing recognition that a more unified EU approach to global health could enhance its governance and improve global health policies, driven by the momentum created by COVID-19. 2️⃣ Strategic Principles: The 2022 EU Global Health Strategy and the 2024 Council conclusions outline principles for a future reflecting EU values: better health and well-being across life stages, stronger health systems and actions to prevent and combat health threats. 3️⃣ Synergies: More purposeful efforts are needed to create synergies between EU policy instruments and global health. Coordination across various European Commission directorates, agencies and other EU actors like the External Action Service and European Investment Bank is essential. Five Key Policy Areas for Alignment 🚀 1. Trade in goods and services 2. Public investment and fiscal instruments 3. Official development assistance and humanitarian aid 4. Solidarity, voice, and multilateralism 5. Research and training The EU’s commitment to global health is clear. Now, it’s about leveraging this commitment to create a healthier world for all. #GlobalHealth #EU #HealthPolicy #HealthcareAdvocacy PS: What are your thoughts on the EU’s role in global health? New Commissioners, don’t lose sight of health in all EU policies #HiAP, says EuroHealthNet Caroline Costongs. Concerns mount about the lack of visibility of policies that improve health and address #inequalities which should go hand in hand with the current EU narrative on boosting competitiveness. It's not too late to change the course! "A healthy population is fundamental to a competitive, thriving economy and vice versa. To make sure this sentiment is not lost in the next College of Commissioners' mandate, we call for a renewed focus on promoting health and reducing health inequalities". Solutions and enabling conditions that EuroHealthNet puts forward? (1) Strive for the overall vision to achieve a #WellbeingEconomy in the EU and take a Health in All EU Policies approach. (2) Broaden the European Health Union to include #equity, #healthpromotion, disease #prevention, and #mentalhealth. #EHU (3) Strengthen the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and ensure that the #digital and #green transitions do not leave people behind. #EPSR More information: https://lnkd.in/dHwuV27C
