Lately, polyester has a very bad reputation, and I get it. It is not breathable, it can produce static, it has a high environmental impact, etc. Nevertheless, I think it is important to remember that polyester has its uses. When it was starting to become popular the main selling points were that it was very durable, economical, didn’t shrink, and was wrinkle-free. Nowadays there are different qualities of polyester, so it doesn’t necessarily carry all the properties above, however it is still relevant in fashion . Polyester blends can be a great way to get the breathability of cotton with extra durability. Polyester pants are wonderful because they don’t wrinkle when sitting. It is good to use when producing clothes to be used in low temperatures. On the other hand, due to the low cost of this material, a lot of fast fashion retailers are using poor quality polyester that has most of the cons and few of the pros of this material.
As always, we the consumers need to do our research and understand what we want out of our clothes, and choose the proper fabric and retailer accordingly, but let’s not reject polyester outright. I love posts like this that show relevant information to make better decisions.
