The Climate Source is obsessed with GHG accounting and allocation for ag supply chains. Check out our latest white paper about #additionality within #carboninset and #Scope3reduction programs!
Additionality is a hot topic in the GHG reduction conversation. Within Scope 3 reduction programs, there is a disconnect between on-farm practices and #inventoryaccounting. This causes uncertainty for buyers, suppliers and farmers and affects project design, impact quantification, and #GHGinvestments. The Climate Source unpacks the issues with #additionality in #livestock and #dairy in our 3rd white paper about #greenhousegas mitigation strategies. The key take-aways? Good baselines and data integrity! We are grateful to our sponsor and thought partner, Athian, and the team led by Kendra Tolley and Paul Myer as we lean into the nuance and complexity of #GHGaccounting to uncover a resilient approach to additionality in animal agriculture! The cattle rancher is an American icon, and cattle ranching has been a central part of our nation’s landscape, identity, heritage, and economy for centuries. The ability to co-locate cattle ranching with utility solar in a way that is good for solar generation, good for the land, and good for the animal could provide extraordinary environmental, economic, and social benefits to Americans across the country while beginning a new, high-tech chapter in the story of the cowboy and his iconic contribution to American culture and historic land use. This is what our #Cattletracker research program, conducted in concert with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and stakeholders from across the energy, agriculture, and academic sectors, is all about. By marrying cattle grazing and solar generation on our land, we can provide new opportunities for a revered tradition while we progress on decentralizing the nation’s electricity generation. We hope this initiative helps to create a new career pathway for American cattle ranchers similar to the one we're providing to the growing community of shepherds in rural communities across the country. The summer of progress continues! Last Thursday in Gainesville, Florida, the Solutions from the Land team and I met with Florida Climate Smart Agriculture (FLCSA) leaders and our University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences partners to review FLCSA’s progress so far, forge consensus on the next phase of work, assess budget needs, and develop a funding strategy to support these efforts. Our teams unanimously agree that there's much more work ahead, and we’re eager to see how our progress continues to unfold. Through FLCSA, farmers, ranchers, foresters, and fishers—alongside their academic, conservation, government, and value chain partners—are working together to advance a new vision for Florida agriculture. This vision goes beyond simply producing high-quality commodities like fruits, vegetables, plants, field crops, livestock, timber, and shellfish. It’s about agriculture that also filters and stores water, enhances biodiversity, sequesters carbon, supports wildlife, and provides essential ecosystem services that improve the quality of life for Florida and beyond. Stay tuned as I’ll be sharing more details on the next chapter of FLCSA in the coming weeks. #FloridaAgriculture #SolutionsFromTheLand #SustainableAg

It is no secret that high level policies discussed and debated at National and International levels directly affect the small business owners, smallholder farmers and local communities. Nassim Taleb in “Skin in the Game” argued that those who make decisions must NOT be isolated from the consequences and outcomes of those decisions. It is therefore always amazing to see initiatives that empower and raise awareness among communities to be able to locate, understand, and effectively utilize their resources (land, livestock, skills and other assets), because this is where good policy input starts. This is where the real “Skin in the Game” is. #sustainabledevelopment #communitybasedapproach #resilience #herewegrow
