Few weeks back, I visited #chennai to meet a friend of mine. While trying to book a rapido to go to her home, I was surprised to an option called #bikepink where women captains in two wheelers come to pick you. and can only be booked by women riders. This initiative has been brought up for providing last mile connectivity to women riders and give meaningful earning opportunities for women captains as stated by #rapido What do you think about this initiative? #ola #uber #ridesharing #india
'Bike Pink for Women,' highlights gender bias rooted in outdated norms. This kind of association, while subtle, stems from illogical stereotypes that persist despite anthropological studies showing their lack of basis. The question arises—why pink, and why associate it with a specific gender? This reflects deeper biases that need to be addressed. The use of pink in association with women is not purely a neutral or arbitrary decision; it has roots in societal perceptions of gender and sexuality, which have been manipulated in various ways over time to reinforce certain norms and expectations. Rapido ,I believe this warrants reconsideration. As a designer and UX professional, I always challenge decisions like these to ensure they are inclusive and purposeful."
Nice initiative by Rapido. But it’s high time that these companies start checking the behaviour of their drivers before hiring. My mother has polio, and it’s not easy for her to walk on uneven surfaces. I had very politely asked the driver to park the car on the ramp so that she could get inside the car easily. The driver said, ”Aur bhi pickup mil jayenge mujhe, aap cancel kar ke kuch dekh lo,” after which he just left, and I was shocked. My mother later told me that happens frequently, and not just Rapido; drivers from Ola and Uber also do that. I hope this message reaches out to the respective teams and they start taking such feebacks seriously.
A few days ago, I became aware of the lack of female rapido captains in the industry. Some of my friends (girls) are not comfortable taking a bike ride with male captains. They prefer an auto/cab instead. So my friends and I discussed why Uber, Ola, and Rapido (in many places) haven't come up with such an initiative. I believe these companies will encounter the following challenges: 1. There will undoubtedly be a group of men who will purposefully use this feature with malicious intent. 2. We cannot confirm whether the person making the booking is indeed a female. There might be a few more. But if in case they come up with something brilliant, then undoubtedly this is going to be a game-changing moment, and it will be a win-win situation for both the company and the customers.
This is great initiative to empower women but moving a women empowerment on these gig works going to support them financially needs. If we think on long term. It’s the idea to keep them as gig works. I don’t see any personal growth on these initiatives. Do they get any skill set. Example : if any one can join this while on their college times to get some pocket money. If once they easily get the tast of money. Which doesn’t need any mental energy and skill set. They used to it and they won’t focus on growth. Already we have un employment issues and ton of scams around. Need a consideration of all these.
Innovation is great but my request to women captain and all customers of #rapido that be careful to them.... They are fraud. They don't listen to customer concern. It's request to women captain that be careful incase of your payment terms. I booked rapido bike but for less than 500meter they charged 136 rupees saying that I cancelled but it was cancelled by fake rapido driver. No customer support at all.
Anybody noticed -other are 3min away and drop at 11:54 But,bike pink -6min away and drop at 11:52 What does it mean??
The other day I got a female auto driver in Bangalore, that too at night. Have never felt safer. Yes, i agree, “not all men”, but men are more likely to hurt us, women (in this context). However, I do worry about the safety of those female drivers driving home alone at night or dealing with potentially drunk male passengers. Ps. I was very happy with my Rapido ride that day.
Just found out about it. It's a great start and as a woman, I would be more happy to take this ride. Why? Because I had taken a few bike rides and though nothing happened, I always felt insecure and unsafe. You always have this feeling in your heart, what if I was touched inappropriately, what if I was taken to somewhere else? The feeling of being insecure and unsafe was always there, not only at night but in daylight as well. This kind of initiative will help ladies to feel comfortable with female riders. We can also select bikes ride option happily and save some cents over booking cabs for short distances. It would be great if such platforms could also provide more training to their partners, in terms of safe driving and dealing with customers. Be it men or women. Because sometimes drivers can be rash, ignoring traffic rules and rude. These issues are something such platforms need to address and make their service better
