The UWI SPE Student Chapter’s Post

The Unimas Credited Co-curriculum for our Dodgeball group hosted a Basic Dodgeball Clinic and Mini Competition at SK St Francis Xavier, Kg Seratau, Padawan on June 8, 2024. The Sarawak Dodgeball Association (SDAS) and this project collaborate on SDG 16 and SDG 17. 88 students in Years 5 and 6 took part in this initiative in total. The goal of this initiative was to give village primary school students the chance to study and play dodgeball, regardless of their gender, colour, or religion (SDG5 & SDG10). In addition, they can promote healthy living and good sportsmanship (SDG 3). In line with the KPT Prihatin Madani, Student for Society and Knowledge Transfer Programme @ Community Initiatives, my friends and I engaged and interacted with the local community during the project to impart dodgeball knowledge and skills to the youngsters. My friends and I have learned about the value of volunteers as a result of this endeavour. Through experience, I am able to improve my social skills when interacting with students from diverse generations. In terms of knowledge, I gain an understanding of proper dodgeball technique and develop useful methods that I can teach children. In terms of abilities, I get to hone my interpersonal and teamwork abilities. Positive effects of this endeavour are also seen in the community and school. The school and higher education institutions are now connected. Along with learning a new sport, the school is encouraged to teach dodgeball on a regular basis. Regarding the community component, I can see how this project will allow parents, instructors, lecturers, and students to collaborate and socialise. This demonstrates how the sense of community was strengthened. In the future, I want to see more projects of a similar nature. I think it affects everyone involved, especially the community, in a number of ways. I am appreciative of the chance I have been given to learn and grow. I anticipate working on more significant projects in the future.

Instead of looking at her learning differences as a disadvantage, Olympic Athlete Adelle Tracey sees her Dyscalculia and Dyslexia as the reasons for why she is so successful as an athlete. She states, "As someone who's dyslexic and is dyscalculic it can be really challenging day to day, particularly with the numbers and distances and times and things. It's something that I've come to realise. The reasons why I do sport have very much to do with the fact that I am neurodiverse as well." Dyscalculia is a much less talked about learning difference than Dyslexia involving numbers and difficulty doing mathematics, recognizing numbers or calculations. Although she says she has missed flights and struggled with other challenges, she attributes her success in athletics to her learning differences. He tried applying for funding but he has not been sucessful regardless of his excellent academic performance because he does not meet the ''South African Citezen'' criteria (he is an international student). "When a child plays, their focus is entirely on the game. We want students to transfer that same level of concentration into the classroom, and EL Play does a great job at helping them achieve that." Ganesh Wagh, a sports educator at Baglan English Medium School in Satana, shared this insight during the ELevate 2025 Regional Qualifiers. Ganesh has faced challenges in rekindling students' interest in outdoor sports, especially after the pandemic, when many children became accustomed to staying indoors and spending long hours on screens. However, the qualifiers brought a refreshing change. An incredible 320 children came out to play football, competing for a spot in the national finals in Bengaluru. Of those, 240 were only in their first year of the program, and the love they’ve developed for the sport in such a short time is remarkable. Their excitement surpassed any nerves they had before their first competitive matches, and their enthusiasm was contagious. As a teacher, Ganesh has a front-row seat to witness the impact of the EL Play program on his students. In just two match days, he has seen firsthand how the lessons learned on the field and the friendships formed have already sparked positive change. Like us, he’s excited to see how these experiences will continue to shape the students throughout the year.
