GNSI Non-Resident Senior Fellow, David V. Gioe, Ph.D. recently published a new academic article questioning the utility of NATO’s conventional deterrent posture when it comes to #Russia’s invasion of #Ukraine. Rooted in Cold War thinking, the conventional deterrence tactics are no longer fulfilling their purpose, according to Gioe’s article: “Reassessing NATO’s Deterrence and Defence Posture in the Baltics: Rebalancing Strategic Priorities to Counter Russian Hybrid Aggression.” Gioe posits that Russia now has different goals towards the Baltics and now relies more on active measures and unconventional tools of statecraft to exert influence on NATO and its member states. https://lnkd.in/eUH8-GA8

Why NATO’s Rapid Reaction Force Needs to Be Ready Now As global security dynamics shift, particularly with rising tensions in Europe, one thing becomes abundantly clear—NATO's response capabilities must evolve. richard hooker, Jr.’s insightful piece on NATO’s reaction force highlights the critical need for a NATO Rapid Reaction Force (NRRF) that is not only fast but strategically positioned to protect NATO allies on short notice. Historically, NATO’s reaction forces have struggled with slow deployment times, especially in the face of rapidly advancing threats, such as Russian aggression in the Baltic States. The proposed NRRF, leveraging the strengths of air-transportable, light infantry units, would drastically reduce response times, providing a credible deterrent and immediate support to NATO member nations facing the threat of invasion. The concept of a rapid, high-readiness force is more urgent than ever. In a world where geopolitical shifts happen fast, NATO must act quickly and decisively. The NRRF would ensure that NATO can reassure its allies, deter aggression, and respond within critical timelines to avoid escalation. In today’s environment, speed and adaptability are just as important as strength. The time to act is now—before the next crisis. #NATO #Security #Defense #RapidReactionForce #GlobalSecurity #Geopolitics

Volatile geopolitics drive defense spending. NATO countries spend $1.3 trillion on defense per year, and it is set to 📈. Still, the gap between current force posture and future-ready capabilities remains colossal. Massive investments in defense are needed - both in legacy assets and emerging technologies, both for Ukraine and for the Allies and partners. Opportunities are immense but we have to cooperate and stay laser-focused on the mission - to defend freedom. Let’s meet at Eurosatory tomorrow. #WeAreNATO #StrongerTogether #ArsenalOfDemocracy #Eurosatory2024 Atlantic Council

As we near the third anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine early next year, we reflect on the return of warfare to Europe that has prompted rapid innovation, keenly watched by both global militaries and analysts. To make sense of the growing pool of analysis and commentary on the conflict in Ukraine by think tanks, academics and industry, the UK MOD asked us to review relevant literature and extract implications for UK and NATO joint doctrine. Our report explores overarching observations, considers domain-specific (across land, maritime, air, cyber and space) and actor-specific (relating to Ukraine, Russia and NATO) observations and identifies implications for joint doctrine. https://lnkd.in/eAPM_DX9 #WarInUkraine #JointDoctrine #UKDefence #NATO #DefenceInnovation
