A nice article by our resident GIS wizard at Urban Green extolling the benefits of Geographic Information Systems. For arboricultural surveys, the technology not only makes the job easier, but also adds accuracy- when you hand over a report, you want to know you're providing the finest detail you can, particularly where it comes to preserving 'high-value' trees (I'm using that as shorthand for the manifold important traits by which we are able to demonstrate their necessity). But I also can't overstate just how much these systems can benefit LPAs. Even in my relatively short experience in consultancy (and lots of research at university... I'm a planning policy nerd) I have met with such vast differences between different councils with regards to access to information. Some have fantastic interactive planning maps (Birmingham has a cracking map, for example). I'm sure it mainly comes down to resources, and with hard-pressed councils struggling, it can seem a but chicken-and-egg: it takes cash up front to fund a GIS system. But there are some relatively inexpensive options out there for creating things like planning maps, taking the pressure off- for tree officers it means no longer having to respond to individual requests regarding TPOs, as a simple example. Also potentially a way of creating more interactive systems to help councils keep on top of surveys and arboricultural works instead of finding themselves in a purely reactivate position... so many benefits, but instead of me waffling on, check the article- Charlie Lawler puts it better 🙂
