Just attended the "Planning While Black: Sustaining an Inclusive Urban Renaissance" panel at the American Planning Association conference, and I'm truly inspired! It's a powerful reminder of how crucial equity is in urban planning. As planners, we must keep communities at the heart of every decision. Let's commit to making equity and inclusivity the foundation of our work. #UrbanPlanning #EquityInAction #APAConference

I just finished reading the City of Charlotte 2040 Comprehensive policy plan and I must say it is a pretty good and well informed city development framework. I am curious to see how well it will or is being executed and how true it remains to its core values and principle. https://lnkd.in/etsSgAC4

My latest with John Stonestreet: "A helpful critique of culture is whether or not human dignity is recognized and valued. Are the powerless, particularly women, the elderly, the poor, and the outcast, given opportunity and protection? Is human ingenuity encouraged in areas such as science, the arts, as well as practical and personal liberties? And are these areas aimed at collective flourishing or at decadence? These chosen areas of analysis do not reflect Western values, but rather eternal truths as applied within particular contexts. These truths make it possible for any society to be, not a clone of the West, but the very best version of itself possible." https://lnkd.in/g-Q_j55B

Love the theme for August CreativeMornings, "What rituals do you practice in your relationships, your spirituality, and your creative work? How do they heighten your sense of purpose and belonging in this world?" At discoverU, we encourage you to find one or two rituals [(journal writing or walking; start simple :)] that you can make yours and grow with it to prioritise yourself. August’s global theme is RITUAL. It was chosen by our Charlottesville chapter in Virginia and illustrated by Matt Smithson. https://buff.ly/3WlQ9Xk Share your thoughts with intention using this month’s hashtag: #CMritual CreativeMornings/Charlottesville

Chicago’s vibrant culture and economic vitality owe much to the contributions of its Mexican community, yet gentrification, erosion of public services, and threats of deportation threatens to erase this rich heritage. As neighborhoods like Pilsen, Little Village and Humboldt Park face displacement, the businesses, traditions, and families that define these areas are being uprooted. Understanding this issue and fighting to preserve our hoods are vital for all Chicagoans, especially Brown and Black Chicagoans, because it’s not just about preserving a community—it’s about safeguarding a shared history, cultural identity, and maintaining political power that allow future generations to thrive. If we don’t act now, we risk losing the essence of what makes Chicago home for so many. https://lnkd.in/gsn-FEMa

What a great discussion about Urban challenges in Atlanta in the Urban Development Policy course at Georgia Tech School of Public Policy. Looking forward to more of these as the semester progresses!
Policy Advisor for Neighborhoods at the City of Atlanta and Director of the Center for Urban Research at the Georgia Institute of Technology
Want to thank former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin for spending some time with my Urban Policy Class last week at the School of Public Policy at Georgia Tech. She shared her insights on how cities work (and how sometimes they don't) and how we should always be "thinking big". She was inspirational as always. The session made me wonder whether we are taking full advantage of the wisdom of those who have made such important contributions to our city. Of course, Shirley did share that her former boss Andrew Young is still giving her projects to work on, so perhaps we are in some ways!
