Seven years ago I took a hard left in my career.
I had a great job at Google, owned an apartment in San Francisco, and had gotten the chance to work with super talented colleagues in cities all over the US and Europe.
But I was deeply dissatisfied. I could not shake this feeling that technology needed to reach more people, and not through phones and screens, but where they lived. It needed to serve them better in their cities and communities. And that I could not play a role in shaping this change in my current environment.
I decided to leave Google and put all of my energy into studying how technology could play a role in helping cities. My family and friends thought I was crazy for leaving such a cushy setup.
Early in my journey I discovered URBAN-X. Their team embodied the ethos that designing better solutions for urban environments could change lives. I started following and absorbing their content.
In 2021, I was serendipitously connected with Johan Schwind. In a chance interview, he pushed my understanding of cities, showing me how cities will be the arena where climate change can be fought. One year later, he gave me a platform to deepen this understanding by allowing me to write for URBAN-X.
Every month since 2022, I have researched and written about a new segment in the Climate Tech ecosystem. I learned about cutting-edge technologies, interviewed founders solving wicked problems, and attended a handful of Climate Tech events across the country.
Through all of this writing and research, I started to firmly believe that transportation is on the front lines of climate change. And creating solutions that propel transport towards cleaner form factors could not only reduce emissions, but change the lives of many undeserved communities where transport plays a big role.
This year, the URBAN-X team provided me a new platform when our team at Encode got accepted into their latest cohort. After a long time of learning through osmosis, I finally get to see how things work behind the curtain. And I am not surprised by the level rigor and discipline the URBAN-X team brings to their work in helping startups shape cities.
For me, the journey started with a call to action. And it took me through twists, turns, and continued failure. I now recognize that’s part of it, and something to love. If anything, my resolve to solve problems for climate, cities and their people has only deepened.
Now it's really time to get after it. 💪
Another day, another introduction for Cohort 15 – say hello to Encode! 👏
The pressure of decarbonizing transportation is falling on fleet owners. On one end, fleets all over the world are being mandated to adopt zero-emissions vehicles. On the other hand, they have the opportunity to modernize their business and operations.
Encode’s fleet modeling software helps fleets electrify smarter, faster, and cheaper. This startup can simulate a fleet’s specific operating conditions, down to exact vehicles, charging, and routes, and measure performance of a live fleet. This helps fleets ensure they can reduce their overall cost, improve their operational efficiency, and increase their productivity.
Founded by Nishu Lahoti and John R. Whitcomb, Encode brings a unique mix of technology and automotive expertise. The team has spent a collective 40+ years thinking through how to measure the performance of vehicles, deploy technology in the built environment, and build data products that drive results in organizations.
