One of the secret problems with work is that hard work alone isn’t enough to get ahead. It’s a tough wake-up call for those of us who spent our school years working to get all As and doing all the things we were told were the key to a successful life. The truth is, the most hard-working, and even the smartest or most-talented, people aren’t always the ones who end up in power. So if hard work alone isn’t what matters, what does? And is there a way to shift what we value to make things more fair? Just listened to two of my favorite business owners in conversation together. What stuck out to me? 50% of external hires for executive roles are seen as not successful hires 18 months in. Ify Walker, did I get that right? Then, that pattern is explained as an individual failure vs. a systemic organizational one. Sarah Noll Wilson also referenced a pattern experienced by women of colors (and others who see systemic issues.) LaRane Garner and Megan Shiflett not only provided a world-class onboarding experience, but continued to provide value through scheduled check-ins and on-demand help. 🥹 We also collaborate a lot on process improvement, hiring, and changing lightbulbs. 💡 🧰 HR professionals, you’re not just managing processes—you’re building people-centered environments, shaping employee benefits, and driving the future of work. Your dedication makes a huge impact, and today, we honor you. I think everyone should tag a HR Professional that made a meaningful impact on their lives! 🫶

Five generations in the workplace? That’s one of the most surprising takeaways from my conversation with Karen M. Coleman, MHRM, PHR, SHRM-CP.
