🚀 What caught Innovate UK Immersive Tech Network’s attention? This! 🚀 Currently, there is a skills gap in the UK in immersive tech fluency. Let’s bring children into this space by engaging their social media savvy and love for gaming, combined with curriculum expectations. Our project at Educate Aug, which earned a finalist spot for the Innovate UK Immersive Tech Awards, represents my first bold steps towards revolutionising student engagement through personalised and community-driven content creation around phonics. The Augmented Reality Phonics Soundboard is a dynamic, inclusive experience that leverages emotional connections and student interests to enhance learning and foster empathy and kindness among students. The platform mirrors social media best practices, allowing students to connect and reconnect in meaningful ways, promoting interpersonal cohesion and harmony. By incorporating what students are passionate about, we create an environment where they not only learn phonics but also build friendships and a sense of community. The open dialogue and instinct for natural, holistic communication and consideration have the potential to address many issues in the education sector and wider society. The best teachers connect with their students on such a level that their influence is felt and remembered through that student's entire life. Having started my education journey at the far left of this graphic, ( yes I’m showing my age 😀and often asked by students if I’m from the olden days 😂) I can appreciate the changes in technology and how they can improve an education experience for both student and teacher. -Engagement matters. The more engaged, the longer students stay in the education system and the better the results for our society. - Methodology matters. We don't all learn the same way. Resources that cater to all learning styles increase knowledge retention. 🌟 UNIVERSITY 5.0 HACKATHON REFLECTIONS 🌟 The recent University 5.0 Hackathon, a key part of the DTUL NOO ULTRA project (more about it here: https://lnkd.in/dWWfRgcF), brought together visionary students who tackled the future challenges of higher education using innovative design thinking and future thinking methods. The creativity and forward-thinking demonstrated by the participants were truly inspiring. The final ideas proposed include: ▶ Holographic Professors: Bringing world-class education to every student, anywhere. ▶ AI-Based Support: Personalized development of individual skills and curriculum setup. ▶ VR and AR Experiences: Providing access to expensive machines, instruments, and distant environments. ▶ Human-Centric Focus: Emphasizing mental health and recognizing students as individuals in both education and life. The hackathon also revealed important feedback on current challenges: 🔺 Lack of Group Work: A need for more collaborative opportunities. 🔺 Lack of Human Interaction: More face-to-face engagement is essential. 🔺 Mind Openness: Encouraging open-mindedness and innovative thinking. 🔺 Out-of-the-Box Learning: Creating more opportunities for creative and unconventional learning experiences. We are incredibly proud of the innovative spirit and thoughtful contributions from students. This event not only showcased their potential to shape the future of education, but also highlighted areas where we can improve to better support their journey. With Meta’s new beta program, universities and colleges in the U.S. and U.K. are pioneering education on Quest headsets, allowing students and educators to access hands-on learning experiences that would otherwise be out of reach. I’m super excited to see how immersive and social learning are converging to reshape education. Research shows community-driven learning boosts retention, engagement, and satisfaction. Early data even shows VR learning can raise attendance by 10% and improve grades by 11%! When learners connect, share insights, and learn together, knowledge sticks. This social aspect can make a lasting impact on both learning and growth. 🎧💡 Looking ahead, imagine virtual field trips, metaverse-based collaboration with global peers, and interactive experiences that make learning both accessible and memorable.
